The female handball team of Ogun State is through to the final of the National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024, after a hard-fought 24-19 semi-final win over Kogi State at the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta.
The victory marks a second triumph for Team Ogun over the Confluence Girls, having defeated them earlier in the group stage of the competition.
Dressed in their traditional yellow jersey, the home side controlled much of the game and capitalised on their earlier knowledge of their opponents to seal a decisive win.
Speaking after the match, Head Coach Shola Sekoni expressed delight at his players’ performance and confidence in their ability to win gold in the final.
“I feel so great. We’re coming gradually. The players gave me 75 percent today, and I’m sure the remaining percentage will be added in the final,” Sekoni said.
He also praised the motivation provided by the state government, particularly Governor Dapo Abiodun, who he said paid the team’s arrears and offered further incentives.
“The players were motivated by the gesture of Gov. Dapo Abiodun. He paid all the arrears and also made promises the players are looking forward to,” he added.
Having played against Kogi, Plateau, and Delta states en route to the final, Sekoni believes his team is well-prepared for any opposition they may face.
Also speaking, standout player Abdulrasaq Idowu expressed confidence in Ogun’s chances to clinch gold and used the opportunity to advocate for the growth of handball in Nigeria.
“If government at all levels can organise more competitions—local government, school, inter-state, national and international—it will go a long way in encouraging more youths to fall in love with handball,” she said.
The final match promises to be an exciting encounter as Team Ogun hopes to crown their strong campaign with the ultimate prize on home soil.
