Bayer Leverkusen managing director Simon Rolfes has confirmed that there is “concrete interest” from Liverpool in Florian Wirtz, but that there is nothing more to report beyond that.
Rolfes was speaking at a press conference to unveil new head coach Erik ten Hag on Monday. The question of whether the Dutchman will have Wirtz at his disposal come the start of the season was always going to be raised.
“It’s currently an open subject with Florian,” the Leverkusen executive stated of the player’s future. “There is concrete interest from Liverpool, but there’s no more to say right now. Florian is our player.”
Ten Hag further explained that he and the club were still to discuss the details of which players will be available to him for 2025/26, and added that, “I’ll work with the players who are available on 1 September.”
Wirtz, who signed a contract extension to 2027 in summer 2022, provided 10 goals and 12 assists in the Bundesliga this past year as the Werkself finished as runners-up under Xabi Alonso, relinquishing the Meisterschale they had won as Invincibles 12 months earlier. Wirtz was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in that title-winning campaign.
Leverkusen’s first competitive fixture of 2025/26 will be in the DFB Cup first round on 15-18 August. They then begin their Bundesliga campaign the following weekend.
