Marseille Star’s Acrobatic Goal Wins Ligue 1 Award Over Moses Simon’s Curler
Marseille forward Amine Gouiri has won the French Ligue 1 Goal of the Season Award ahead of Super Eagles forward Moses Simon, according to Soccernet.ng.
The French Ligue 1 held its awards night on Sunday, and Nigerian forward Simon was one of the hopefuls going into the event.
The Super Eagles star has had a great season with Nantes, supplying seven goals and nine assists in 31 league appearances.
Although he was not nominated for the Player of the Season Award, he made the nominations for the Goal of the Season Award. Simon was nominated alongside Maghnes Akliouche (Monaco), Amine Gouiri (Marseille), Esteban Lepaul (Angers), and Andrey Santos (Strasbourg).
The goal which Simon was nominated for was his winning goal against Rennes last December. Aside from the significance of the goal, the way he scored it was absolutely brilliant.
The Super Eagles star got a ball on the left side of the pitch, dribbled his way past four defenders to create some space for himself in the box, and let out a wicked curler that nestled at the back of the net.
Unfortunately for Simon, that goal was not enough to convince the voters that he deserved the award. Instead, it was Gouiri’s goal against Brest that won it.
The relegation battle in the Ligue 1 has dragged into the final day of the season, as Nantes have 33 points and are just one spot above relegation.
Le Havre and St Etienne, who sit below them in the relegation zone have 31 and 30 points respectively. If these teams win and Nantes lose their final league game against Montpellier next week, Moses Simon and his teammates may be in trouble.
Nevertheless, Montpellier have been the worst team in Ligue 1 this season, so Nantes should be able to get a win.
