Flying Eagles Land In Ismailia, Readying For Key U20 AFCON Quarterfinal
The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have touched down in Ismailia, Egypt, as they begin final preparations for their quarterfinal match in the ongoing 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The high-stakes fixture is scheduled for Monday, with the identity of their opponent set to be decided tonight (Thursday) when Group A action concludes.
Having finished second in Group B with five points — after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Kenya — the Flying Eagles remain unbeaten and determined.
Their stay in Cairo saw them grind out key results against Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya. Now, with qualification secured, the focus has shifted to the knockout stage where every moment counts.
Awaiting them in Group A are four potential challengers: D.R. Congo, Ghana, Senegal, and Central African Republic — all still in contention going into the final round of matches. The outcome of tonight’s fixtures will determine who faces Nigeria, adding further suspense to what is already a tense buildup in Ismailia.
Captain Daniel Bameyi, a consistent performer and a leader on and off the pitch, emphasized the team’s readiness.
“We’ve put the group stage behind us. Now it’s knockout football — there’s no room for mistakes. Our mindset is simple: stay focused, play as a unit, and take it one game at a time,” he said shortly after arrival.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu echoed the sentiment, urging discipline and concentration. “We’re in Ismailia for one purpose — to reach the semifinals and qualify for the World Cup. The boys understand what this means, and we’re fully focused,” he noted.
As they await news of their quarterfinal opponents, the Flying Eagles are maintaining high intensity in training, with a strong emphasis on tactical precision and recovery.
“This stage of the tournament is about hunger, discipline, and clarity of purpose,” Zubairu added. “We are not here to chase headlines; we’re here to make history.”
Nigeria’s path to glory continues — and all eyes now turn to Group A, where the next chapter of this campaign will be written tonight.
