Joining Chelsea was not a good move, Sherwood tells Chelsea youngster

Former Premier League manager Tim Sherwood has expressed regret over Carney Chukwuemeka’s 2022 transfer to Chelsea, suggesting it was a poor career decision for the talented midfielder.

Chukwuemeka, who joined from Aston Villa for a reported £20 million, is now set for a loan move to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund after struggling to secure regular playing time under manager Enzo Maresca.

“He shouldn’t have left Aston Villa in hindsight. Leaving Villa and going to Chelsea has not been a good move for him,” Sherwood told Sky Sports.

“Financially, it probably has, but it’s not about that when you’re his age — it’s about playing games and progressing your career. Borussia Dortmund has been a good place for a lot of British lads who have gone over there and done exceptionally well.”

Sherwood praised Chukwuemeka’s potential, adding, “I think he’s got a lot of talent, I really do. He’s a midfielder I wouldn’t want to play against, but he just needs to play on a regular basis.”
