Sergio Ramos' move to Botafogo breaks down, eyes MLS transfer
Sergio Ramos is reportedly waiting for a call from the MLS after his move to Brazilian side Botafogo broke down.
According to Estadio Deportivo, the defender’s entourage, led by his brother Rene Ramos, had been in Brazil offering the player to multiple clubs, including Botafogo. However, negotiations with Botafogo came to a halt due to the financial demands made by the 37-year-old defender.
Vasco de Gama and Flamengo also declined to negotiate with the former Real Madrid star for similar financial reasons. While Corinthians continue to show interest, the likelihood of a deal happening remains slim as Ramos’ salary expectations are a stumbling block for potential suitors in Brazil.
Despite the setback in Brazil, the most realistic destination for Ramos now appears to be the Major League Soccer in the United States with San Diego FC. MLS has become an increasingly popular choice for European stars in the twilight of their careers and since Lionel Messi Messi joined Inter Miami, many are making the move stateside.
The expansion side was previously linked with Ramos in the summer but the talks fizzled out. However, there is fresh momentum in that direction as they are reportedly eyeing the Spanish defender as another marquee signing having already secured the services of Mexican forward Hirving “Chucky” Lozano from PSV.
Ramos had also been on the radar of clubs in Saudi Arabia. Most notably, he was linked with Al-Nassr, the club where his former teammate and close friend Cristiano Ronaldo is currently plying his trade. Another Saudi club, Al-Orobah, which has former Real Betis player Cristian Tello in its squad, also expressed interest, but no concrete offer emerged.
Ramos’ name has also been mentioned in connection with Turkish giants Galatasaray. The Istanbul club has held Ramos in high regard for some time, and they made attempts to sign him last summer. While no deal was reached at the time, Galatasaray reportedly still has him on their radar as a potential defensive reinforcement.
