Published

Gombe State Governor, his Excellency, Inuwa Yahaya has demanded accountability in the way State owned club, Gombe United Football Club is being managed.

In a chat, with the Publisher and Chairman CEO of Northeast Times Newspaper, Alhaji Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe, the governor lamented the extent he had carried Gombe United along during his first tenure and has continued to do so. Alas! “All I could get from people was that I wants Gombe United Football Club dead”.

The governor is not usually among those that hug the media for publicity on issues bothering on good governance, however hinted that his accountability records gave him victory recently at the supreme court for a second term as Gombe State helmsman.

In the chat, His Exellency also recounted the amount of money his government doles out to Gombe United monthly and queried “What had they done with the money?

“I have been releasing 12 million (Twelve million Naira) every month to the Club management for more than a year and never stopped. What have they been doing with it?

He continued, “I am aware they have been selling players to other clubs and also transferring players abroad, they only tell him they sold players, but how much, where the money is and how many players he doesn’t know or they don’t tell him”.
A seemingly embarrassed Governor Inuwa, could not understand why a privately owned club in the state DOMA United could be doing well and Gombe United owned by Government is complaining.

His Excellency also said that, “DOMA UNITED is a private Club owned by an individual not Government. Why are they doing well? Is the Chairman of DOMA UNITED spending 12m every month on Doma United?

“DOMA UNITED are from Gombe too, they are not from any other State, I can decide to help them and support them too. For an individual to show the kind of management acumen, accountability and performance of DOMA UNITED, they deserve our praise and support”.

Governor revealed so many things especially how he is being scandalized on social media, alleging that people of Gombe State and sports lovers saying he wants to destroy Gombe United, that he is not interested in helping the team.
Interestingly, the governor however regretted how unfair people have been to him and his Government.

Stormers FC will return to NNL soonest, Olopade Assures

The Chairman / proprietor of Stormers Sports Club of Abeokuta, Chief Bukola Olopade, has promised that with proper restructuring, planning and complete dedication of the players and coaches of the team, the relegated Nigeria National League club will return to the professional league cadre, sooner than expected.

Stormers SC, at the end of the concluded NNL 2023/2024 season were relegated to the lower Nationwide League after ammassing a meagre 24 points in 22 matches in the Group A of the NNL.

The team’s below par NNL outing only saw them winning 7 matches, lost 12 and drew three games, only good enough for the bottom third position in a league of 12 teams.

Stormers SC scored 16 and conceded 10 goals, a performance not good enough to keep the team in the professional league, when compared with the NNL Group A Champions, Madiba FC, that finished with 40 points with the same number of matches in the league, won 18 games, lost 6 and drew 6.

Olopade, a former Commissioner of Youth and Sports in Ogun State, stated that, by all standards, Stormers SC’s performance was not befitting enough and he doesn’t have any option than to make positive changes in the team that would lead them to greatness.

Olopade said on Monday in his office in Lagos that: “The relegation of Stormers SC from the professional NNL to the amateur Nationwide, is failure on the part of the technical crew and the players.”

He noted that, with the new plan for the club ahead of the 2024/2025 campaign, he would ensure Stormers Sports Club return to the NNL sooner than anyone expects. Adding that :”The goal of the team is to get promoted back to the NNL and in record time step up to the premier league and play prominently in the Nigeria Professional Football League. I believe strongly this is possible with hard work and investment in young players who will believe their future is in the team.”
