After months of chasing and battling other clubs in the transfer race, Barcelona have officially confirmed the signing of Vitor Roque from Athletico Paranaense.
The 18-year-old striker had been a man in demand this summer with several top clubs across Europe pursuing his signing, such as Barcelona, Manchester United, PSG, and Chelsea, among others.
However, the young forward always had his heart set on a transfer to Barcelona, and the presence of new sporting director Deco helped speed up negotiations and finalise an agreement. The Catalans’ relationship with the youngster’s agent, Andre Cury, also played a role.
Roque signs for Barcelona in a deal worth €30 million in fixed fee and another €31 million in variables, of which €5 million is related to Ballon d’Or clauses.
The teenage prodigy, who has scored 15 goals in the ongoing season in Brazil for Athletico Paranaense, has signed a long-term contract with the Blaugrana running until the 2030/31 season. The deal comes with a mammoth €500 million release clause.
Given the Blaugrana’s Financial Fair Play problems, Roque will not be joining the club right away this summer and fans will have to wait until the summer of 2024 to see the 18-year-old step out on the pitch in the club’s iconic garnet and blue colours.
Roque, nicknamed ‘Tigrinho’, will serve as a backup to ace goalscorer Robert Lewandowski once he arrives, before eventually replacing the veteran superstar as the main striker at Barcelona.
