Manchester United welcome plans to regenerate area around Old Trafford

Manchester United have described plans to regenerate the Wharfside area around Old Trafford as “tremendously exciting”, with the club viewing this development as potentially having synergy with their own plans regarding the stadium.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the incoming 25% owner, is intent on either building a new ground for United on the same land or revamping the current site. The plans to regenerate the wider area, a Trafford Council initiative, were backed by Collette Roche, United’s chief operating officer. “This vision for Trafford Wharfside is tremendously exciting and we are proud to be supporting Trafford Council with their ambitious plans for an area with such huge potential,” she said.

“We will continue to work closely with the council, and other local stakeholders, on how any future development work at Old Trafford can complement their vision and, most importantly, benefit the local community.”

The vision is for five districts, one of which would be the Stadium District, described in the council statement as the “Manchester United area”. Liz Patel, the council’s executive member for economy and regeneration, said: “The Trafford Wharfside master plan offers a regeneration vision for a hugely important area within Trafford. This area takes in the world-famous sporting institution that is Manchester United as well as other major sites including the Imperial War Museum and the Manchester Ship Canal.

“Working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create new homes, new neighbourhoods and help create a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium.”

Super Falcons Receive Cash Gifts From Osimhen, Premier League, And Serie A Stars

Super Falcons Receive Cash Gifts From Osimhen, Premier League, And Serie A Stars

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are enjoying a hero’s welcome and an outpouring of financial support after capturing their record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.

The new African champions returned to Nigeria on Monday afternoon to ecstatic welcome from compatriots.

In the latest show of solidarity, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has led a group of Super Eagles stars in rewarding the triumphant squad with generous cash gifts.

Osimhen, Nigeria’s most valuable football star and 2023 Africa Player of the Year, was one of the first to call the Falcons after their victory.

He followed up with a personal financial gesture — a move swiftly echoed by six other international teammates.

Those joining the donation drive include Fulham’s Alex Iwobi, Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman, Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, Southampton’s Joe Aribo, and veteran defender Leon Balogun. Each has contributed ₦1 million to every one of the 24 players in the Falcons squad — a collective gift amounting to ₦24 million from each of the 6 Nigerian internationals.

More rewards for Super Falcons
This player-driven gesture follows an unprecedented package of rewards unveiled by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a state reception in Abuja also on Monday.

Every player received a three-bedroom apartment, a national honour — Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) — and $100,000 in cash.

The team’s 11-person coaching and administrative staff were not left out. They also received national awards, equivalent housing, and $50,000 each in appreciation of their efforts behind the scenes.

Piling onto the celebrations, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum announced an additional ₦10 million for each squad member and official – a wave of goodwill unseen in the history of Nigerian women’s football.

Speaking on the significance of the rewards, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau hailed the federal government’s actions as groundbreaking.

“No leader has ever done this for women’s football. This is a message to every girl-child in Nigeria: greatness is possible,” he said.

The Super Falcons secured the title in dominant fashion, beating Tunisia, Botswana, Zambia and defeating South Africa in the semis before edging hosts Morocco in a gripping final.

Super Falcons Eye World Cup Glory After WAFCON Triumph

Super Falcons Eye World Cup Glory After WAFCON Triumph

Nigeria’s female football national team, Super Falcons have turned their focus on winning the next FIFA Women’s World Cup, as they seek to achieve greater height after conquering Africa for the 10th time.

Sports247 gathered that the Falcons’ 3-2 victory over Morocco in Saturday’s 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final means Nigeria has won 10 out of the competition’s 13 editions; and they even went home with a brand new trophy that was launched specially for this year’s edition.

The team’s chain of achievements has now left Falcons’ players aiming for equally big results on the global stage, and their next charge is being led by WAFCON 2024 winning captain, Rasheedat Ajibade.

‘The Lady With Blue Hair’ stated the Falcons’ next target while delivering an expertly scripted speech on Monday during a state reception that was organised for them at The Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Ajibade pointed out, “Our journey to this moment has been one of great determination and courage. We have faced the best teams in the world and held our own on the global stage.

“We are not content to rest on our laurels. Our vision is bold … we want to become the best female football team in the world.”

The product of FC Robo Queens of Lagos, who is also fondly called ‘Rash’ by her colleagues, added that they now want to step up from the level of mere participants at the Ladies’ Mundial into that of title contenders.

Ajibade, though, quickly interjected that the players will need total support from their fans, Nigerian football top shots and the National Sports Commission (NSC) in order to achieve their huge ambitions.

She averred, “We dream of standing on top of the global stage … not just as competitors, but as champions.

“To achieve this, we humbly seek the continuation and enhanced support of the Nigerian Football Federation, sports ministry and the federal government. With your partnership, we can have world-class training facilities.”

Ajibade concluded by pointing out that each step taken forward by the present Falcons’ squad would be an inspiration for young players to emulate, as they seek to live their ambitious dreams of excelling in the nation’s jersey.

“We’ll be able to stay in the best place possible, as we create a pathway for the next generation of Falcons to soar even higher.

“Together, we can show the world that Nigeria is not just a participant in global football but a leader.

“We want to keep making the nation proud and bring more joy to Nigerians around the world. Let’s change the narrative together,” Ajibade concluded eloquently.

Super Falcons Share $1M WAFCON Prize Plus Presidential Bonuses

Super Falcons Share $1M WAFCON Prize Plus Presidential Bonuses Super Falcons Share $1M WAFCON Prize Plus Presidential Bonuses

Each member of the Super Falcons squad is set to receive a massive financial award following their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph, according to Soccernet.ng.

With a 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in Rabat on Saturday night, Nigeria claimed their 10th WAFCON title.

Following this victory, the Nigerian women’s team completed a mission they boldly labeled “Mission X” before the tournament began.

Now, the Super Falcons squad is set to receive an unprecedented financial reward.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded Nigeria’s Super Falcons USD $1,000,000 for winning the 2024 WAFCON.

This record-breaking payout is double the $500,000 awarded in 2022. In Naira terms, $1 million translates to over ₦1.5 billion. For context, WAFCON winners before 2022 only received around $200,000.

Nigerian Government Rewards
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded each player will receive $100,000 (in Naira equivalent, approximately ₦153 million), while 11 technical crew members will receive $50,000 (~₦75.6 million).

All players and staff were conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Each team member was also given a furnished 3-bedroom apartment in the “Renewed Hope” housing estate.

Additionally, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced ₦10 million in cash to each team member (players and staff).

NFF Bonuses
According to Daily Post, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had pledged 30% of the $1 million CAF prize (around $300,000 or ₦230 million) would be distributed to the squad.

If shared equally among 24 players, that equates to about $12,500 per player.

Additional Sponsorship and Support
There were no major post-victory corporate rewards publicly announced as of the time of reporting. The most notable gesture outside government was the NGF’s ₦10 million reward. According to Premium Times, some state governors supported the team during the tournament (e.g., Ogun State gave ₦20 million for a friendly win), but these were pre-final.

Full Breakdown Per-Player Summary
Each Super Falcons player is set to receive:

$100,000 from the Presidency
₦10 million from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum
$12,500 from NFF bonus pool
One 3-bedroom apartment
National honor (OON)

Technical staff will receive similar benefits, with a $50,000 cash bonus in place of the $100,000 allocated to players.
When Will the Super Falcons Be Paid?

The rewards were announced on July 28, 2025, at a reception held at the State House. Payment of cash bonuses is expected to be swift, processed via the Central Bank or the Ministry of Sports.

Housing allocations are expected to follow in the coming months.

This stands in contrast to past editions—notably 2016, when players stormed the National Assembly for unpaid bonuses, and 2022, when the team boycotted training over similar issues, as documented by Afrik-Foot.

In 2024, President Tinubu’s administration ensured all entitlements were cleared before the Super Eagles final, which the same strict measure is expected to be put in place for the Super Falcons.
