Why Thomas Partey has been left out of Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations squad

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey lost his race against time to be fit for the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana in the coming weeks, missing out on his country’s final 27-player squad.

Partey has made nearly 50 senior international appearances since his 2016 debut and was at last winter’s World Cup in Qatar. But a hamstring injury that has been troubling him for a couple of months has cost the 30-year-old a place at the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

The Gunners player wasn’t named in Ghana coach Chris Hughton’s provisional squad last month and was, perhaps unsurprisingly, still absent when the final list was eventually confirmed.

“I’ve spent a lot of this period of time with Thomas and also engaged the medical staff at Arsenal. They will treat this injury with caution, and so will the player. This is a big injury for him, the biggest injury he’s had,” Hughton explained at a press conference for the squad announcement.

“The most important thing for me as head coach is to give him the support he needs during this period of time. From all the information we’ve been given, the timelines of his recovery and the caution that will be taken will not meet our timelines for the AFCON.”

The insinuation is that a fit Partey would have been part of the squad looking to win only Ghana’s third African title after a number of near misses over the past 16 years.

The Black Stars reached at least the semi-finals in six consecutive AFCONs between 2008 and 2017, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2015 in particular. Ghana were last crowned African champions way back in 1982 when national football icon Abedi Pele, now 59 and father to veteran internationals Andre and Jordan Ayew, was at the very start of his career.

Cricket: Australia Seal 5-0 Win In West Indies T20 Series

Fifth T20 International, Warner Park, St Kitts and Nevis

West Indies 170 (19.4 overs): Hetmyer 52, Rutherford 35; Dwarshuis 3-41

Australia 173-7 (17 overs): Owen 37, Green 32; Hosein 3-17

Australia win by three wickets

Scorecard

Australia completed a comprehensive 5-0 clean sweep against West Indies in their T20 series by winning the final match of their tour by three wickets.

The hosts were put into bat at Warner Park in St Kitts and Nevis and managed 170, with Shimron Hetmyer hitting 52 from 31 balls as Australian bowler Ben Dwarshuis took 3-41.

The Windies were given hope of a win when they reduced Australia to 25-3 but Cameron Green, Tim David and Mitch Owen got their side back on track.

Green scored 32 runs from 18 balls, David smashed four sixes in a 12-ball 30 and Owen raced to 37 – including three fours and three sixes – in 17 balls.

Aaron Hardie added 28 from 25 balls as Australia reached their target with three overs to spare.

“I didn’t expect 5-0 at the start of the series,” said Australia captain Mitchell Marsh. “But we played some great cricket. It was something we spoke about after the fourth game.

“We knew no Australian team had completed a clean sweep. We’ve had guys come in and played different roles for us.”

The T20 series defeat compounds a difficult time for West Indies, coming off the back of their 3-0 loss in the Test series against Australia.

Australia bowled out the Windies for just 27 – the second lowest score in Test history, and the worst since 1955 – in the third Test and that led to Cricket West Indies president Dr Kishore Shallow calling for an emergency meeting to review the series and final match in particular.

The good tidings also got to the team’s 11-person technical and administrative crew, who were also given national awards, 3-bedroom apartments and the sum of $50,000 each.

The pronouncements were made during the reception for the African champions at the Presidential Villa, on their arrival from Morocco, where they won the 13th edition of the Women Africa Cup of Nations to make it a record-extending 10th triumph at the continent’s flagship competition for women.

Ile -Ife Launches 5KM Cultural Road Race to Empower Youth Through Sport

Ife Road Race
The ancient city of Ile-Ife is set to host the maiden edition of the Ife Road Race on September 25, 2025, in what promises to be a vibrant celebration of athleticism, culture, and community development.
Scheduled to hold during the iconic Olojo Festival, the 5-kilometre race aims to discover and nurture raw athletic talent while promoting healthy living and preserving Yoruba heritage.
Conceived by Sooko Adeleke Odewade, a passionate advocate of youth empowerment, the race is part of a broader mission to use sports as a tool for transformation.
“Our society lacks opportunities for discovering and grooming talent,” Sooko Odewade said. “This race is a platform to identify raw potential, but it won’t stop there. We’re building a system of coaching, mentorship, and support long after the race ends.”
With the gracious endorsement of His Imperial Majesty, Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ife Road Race is being organised in partnership with the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative, and is open to youth, amateur runners, and professional athletes.
Participants will receive certificates of participation, with special cash prizes for category winners.
The race route has been carefully designed to pass through notable cultural landmarks in Ile-Ife, offering a scenic tour of the city’s rich heritage.
Beyond competition, the race will connect promising young athletes with seasoned professionals, coaches, and institutions.
Discussions are ongoing with universities, the state sports council, and veteran athletes—many of whom now thrive abroad—to provide post-race coaching and scholarship opportunities.
“We want to help these young ones become world-class athletes. If we can create role models from this effort, the ripple effect will inspire many others,” Sooko Odewade added.
The event also aims to boost local economic activity by attracting visitors, vendors, and sponsors during the Olojo Festival period.
Organisers are calling on corporate bodies, brands, government agencies, and philanthropists to support the race through sponsorship and partnership.
“This is more than a race,” said an official from the Alade’fa Initiative. “It’s a movement. An investment in youth, in health, and in the cultural soul of our community.”
Registration is now open for interested participants via the official race platforms. Categories are available for youth, the general public, and elite runners, with limited slots to ensure a smooth and safe experience.
Organisers have also issued a call for sponsors, volunteers, media partners, and local businesses to come onboard and contribute to the success of this unique event.
With its blend of tradition, purpose, and athletic energy, the Ife Road Race is set to become a new flagship event on Nigeria’s sports and cultural calendar.
