Barcelona Wonderkid Lovro Chelfi Set for Saudi Arabia Move as Catalans Secure Buy-Back Clause

Barcelona are ready to send Croatian wonderkid Lovro Chelfi to Saudi Arabia — but the Catalan giants aren’t completely letting go of their teenage prospect.

The 19-year-old winger is reportedly close to completing a permanent move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Diriyah for a nominal fee, giving him the chance to play regular senior football after struggling to break into Barcelona’s first team.

But Barcelona have made sure they could still have a say in his future.

Barcelona keep the door open

According to reports, Barcelona have negotiated a buy-back clause as part of the deal.

That means the Blaugrana could bring Chelfi back to the club if he develops into the player they believe he can become.

For Barcelona, it is a clever piece of business.

Rather than keeping a young player who is unlikely to receive regular first-team minutes, the club can allow him to develop elsewhere while retaining an avenue to bring him back.

A fresh start in Saudi Arabia

Chelfi has spent much of his time playing at academy level since joining Barcelona from Croatian club NK Kustosija in 2025.

The Dinamo Zagreb academy product made 21 appearances and scored once for Juvenil A last season, while also making one appearance for Barcelona Atlètic.

With opportunities in the senior team limited, a move to Al-Diriyah could provide the playing time and responsibility he needs at this stage of his development.

From Croatia to Barcelona and now Saudi Arabia

Chelfi has already experienced an unusual journey for a 19-year-old.

After developing in Croatia, he earned a move to Barcelona and continued his progression through the club’s youth system.

He also represented Croatia U19s at the European Championship this summer, scoring against Serbia.

Now, Saudi Arabia offers the teenager a completely different challenge.

The move may look like Barcelona are cutting ties with a prospect, but the buy-back clause tells a different story.

Barcelona are selling the present — while keeping a door open for the future.

If Chelfi flourishes in the Saudi Pro League, the Catalans could ultimately have the option to bring their Croatian wonderkid back to Camp Nou.
