Bacary Sagna Warns Enzo Fernandez: ‘You Won’t Be Man City’s Most Important Player’

Enzo Fernandez has been warned that a potential move from Chelsea to Manchester City could come with a major change in status.

Former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna believes the Argentine midfielder would have to adjust to a completely different hierarchy at the Etihad if he completes a sensational transfer.

Fernandez has established himself as one of Chelsea’s most influential players since arriving at Stamford Bridge. But Sagna believes that status would not automatically follow him to Manchester.

‘Haaland is the most important City player’

Sagna’s message is simple: Fernandez would no longer be the main man.

The former City defender pointed to Erling Haaland as the established focal point of Pep Guardiola’s team.

“Enzo is probably regarded as Chelsea’s most important player. If he joins City, he won’t be the most important City player. Erling Haaland is the most important City player.”

At Chelsea, Fernandez carries significant responsibility and has become an influential figure within the squad.

At City, however, he would be joining a team packed with established stars — meaning he would have to earn his place within the existing hierarchy.

A different way of playing

Sagna also believes Fernandez would need to adapt to City’s highly structured style of football.

At Chelsea, the Argentine can sometimes take more responsibility with the ball and carry possession himself.

City demand something different.

When teammates make runs, players are expected to recognise them quickly and release the ball rather than holding onto possession for too long.

For Fernandez, that could mean changing some of the habits that have made him so influential at Chelsea.

From leading man to team player?

That’s ultimately the biggest challenge Sagna sees.

Fernandez is accustomed to being one of the players expected to take control.

At City, he would be joining a squad where the responsibility is spread across several world-class players.

And according to Sagna, that could require a significant mental adjustment.

The question isn’t whether Fernandez is good enough for Manchester City. It’s whether he’s ready to go from being Chelsea’s leading man to becoming one piece of a much bigger machine.

If the transfer happens, the Argentine’s ability to adapt could be just as important as his ability on the ball.
