Tobi Amusan’s 100m Hurdles World Record Broken by Masai Russell
Tobi Amusan’s 100m Hurdles World Record Falls as Masai Russell Makes History in Zurich
Tobi Amusan’s remarkable reign as the world’s fastest woman in the 100m hurdles has come to an end.
Nearly four years after the Nigerian sprint hurdler stunned the athletics world with her historic world record, Olympic champion Masai Russell has rewritten the record books at the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich.
Russell produced the race of her life at the iconic Weltklasse Zurich meeting, finally breaking a record she had come agonisingly close to earlier in the season.
Her performance is now awaiting formal ratification by World Athletics.
Russell finally gets her record
Russell arrived in Zurich knowing she had history within reach.
The American had already threatened Amusan’s mark twice during the season but fell just short on both occasions.
This time, there was no disappointment.
Russell exploded from the blocks, attacked the hurdles with precision and powered across the finish line to deliver the fastest women’s 100m hurdles race ever recorded.
The Olympic champion had finally done it.
The end of an incredible Amusan era
For Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, Russell’s performance brings an end to one of the most remarkable chapters in African athletics.
Amusan set the previous world record at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, producing a stunning performance that announced her as one of the world’s greatest hurdlers.
Her record stood for almost four years.
During that time, Amusan became a symbol of Nigerian excellence on the global athletics stage, winning major titles and inspiring a new generation of athletes.
The record may be gone, but the legacy remains
A world record falling does not erase what Amusan achieved.
Her historic run in Eugene changed Nigerian athletics history and cemented her place among the greatest 100m hurdlers of her generation.
Now, Russell begins her own chapter as the new world-record holder.
For Nigerian fans, however, Amusan’s name will forever be attached to one of the most extraordinary moments the country has produced on the track.
Records are made to be broken. Legacies are not.
And Tobi Amusan’s legacy remains firmly intact.
