On or off? Truth behind Ederson’s £38m Manchester United transfer after collapse rumours
Manchester United have firmly dismissed speculation that their proposed move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson is in danger of collapsing, insisting the Brazilian remains on course to become Michael Carrick’s first major signing.
Reports emerging from South America suggested negotiations had stalled, but sources close to the deal insist the transfer remains fully on track.
United move quickly to shut down speculation
Rumours of a potential breakdown in negotiations gathered momentum following reports from Brazil claiming the transfer had hit a major obstacle.
However, Manchester United have responded by making it clear there has been no significant change in the status of the deal.
According to TEAMtalk, club sources insist Ederson is still expected to complete his medical as soon as travel arrangements allow following Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup.
One source said:
“There are no issues with the Ederson move. He is due for a medical in England as soon as is logistically possible, and that will all be confirmed in due course, but the move is very much in place and still on.”
Deal worth almost £39 million
United’s agreement with Atalanta is expected to be worth a total of £38.85 million ($52m).
The package reportedly consists of:
- £34 million guaranteed
- £3.85 million in performance-related add-ons
The add-ons are believed to be relatively straightforward to achieve, meaning Atalanta are expected to receive close to the full value of the agreement.
With Brazil now out of the World Cup following their defeat to Norway, Ederson is expected to travel to England this week to complete the remaining formalities.
Carrick’s midfield rebuild begins
Ederson has been identified as a key figure in Michael Carrick’s plans to reshape Manchester United’s midfield.
The Brazilian’s athleticism, defensive work rate and ability to drive forward with possession make him an ideal fit for Carrick’s preferred style of play.
United are also expected to strengthen further in midfield during the remainder of the transfer window, particularly after Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s injury concerns.
Personal terms have already been agreed, with the contract understood to include an option for the club to extend the deal beyond its initial length.
What happens next?
Barring any unforeseen complications during the medical process, Ederson is expected to become Manchester United’s first signing of the summer.
His arrival would mark the beginning of what the club hopes will be a significant rebuild ahead of a campaign in which they will compete in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Despite the recent rumours, all indications suggest the transfer remains firmly on track.
