Bruno Fernandes delighted as Cristiano Ronaldo silences critics with first World Cup goals for Portugal

Bruno Fernandes admitted it was important for Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo to get on the scoresheet after the veteran forward inspired a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan at the 2026 World Cup.

The emphatic win marked a significant response from Roberto Martinez’s side following their disappointing opening draw against DR Congo, with Ronaldo producing a clinical display to remind everyone why he remains Portugal’s focal point.

Ronaldo answers his critics

The 41-year-old arrived at the tournament facing increasing scrutiny after a frustrating start to the competition, but he quickly put those doubts to rest against Uzbekistan.

Ronaldo opened the scoring inside six minutes before adding a second goal before half-time, helping Portugal cruise to all three points and take a major step toward the knockout stages.

His brace also secured another place in football history, making him the first male player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cups.

Fernandes: Ronaldo remains Portugal’s go-to man

Fernandes, who provided the assist for Portugal’s third goal, was full of praise for his captain after the final whistle.

“It was important for our captain to score. It was important for us that he scored,” Fernandes told reporters.

“He’s our go-to player in attack. We’re very happy for him.”

The Manchester United midfielder also admitted there was added satisfaction in combining with Ronaldo on the biggest stage in international football.

“It’s always special to get an assist with the national team, especially at the World Cup, which is a special tournament.”

Team success remains the priority

Despite Ronaldo grabbing the headlines, Fernandes insisted individual achievements remain secondary to Portugal’s collective ambitions.

The midfielder enjoyed another outstanding club season before arriving at the World Cup and is expected to play a key role in Portugal’s hopes of lifting the trophy.

However, Fernandes stressed that his focus remains firmly on helping the team succeed.

“What matters is that Portugal scores, whether it’s me or not,” he explained.

“We managed to score a lot of goals, and we’re happy about that.

“I’m here to set up my teammates up front – it’s part of my game – regardless of whether I score or not. I believe my moment will come, and that it will be at a time when it’s truly needed.”

Portugal build momentum

After opening their campaign with a frustrating stalemate against DR Congo, Portugal needed a convincing performance to restore confidence.

Ronaldo’s return to form, combined with a dominant team display, provided exactly that as Martinez’s side rediscovered their attacking rhythm.

With qualification to the knockout rounds now firmly within reach, Portugal will hope their captain’s goalscoring breakthrough is the start of another memorable World Cup run.
