Michail Antonio Blames Graham Potter For West Ham Relegation In Explosive “Didn’t Understand The Culture” Attack
West Ham United’s shocking relegation from the Premier League continues to send shockwaves through English football — and now former Hammers star Michail Antonio has pointed the finger directly at ex-manager Graham Potter.
In a brutally honest interview, Antonio accused Potter of dismantling the leadership core inside the dressing room and failing to understand the identity and culture of the club.
The comments have sparked huge debate among West Ham supporters, especially after a disastrous campaign that saw the club fall from European success to Championship football in just a few years.
Antonio Says Potter “Changed Too Much”
Antonio did not hold back when reflecting on Potter’s short and troubled spell at the London Stadium.
According to the Jamaican international, the former Brighton and Chelsea boss made major changes too quickly after arriving at the club — and removed the very players who held the dressing room together.
“I just feel like Graham Potter came in and tried to change too much,” Antonio told The i Paper.
“As a manager, you’ve got to come in and understand the culture of the club. And I just don’t feel like he did.”
That statement alone shows how deep the frustration runs among some of West Ham’s former players.
“He Got Rid Of All The Leaders”
Antonio specifically highlighted the departures of several experienced figures who had formed the backbone of the squad for years.
The striker named himself, Lukasz Fabianski, Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal and Edson Alvarez as players who were pushed out during Potter’s rebuild.
“He got rid of all the senior pros,” Antonio explained.
That decision, according to Antonio, created a leadership vacuum inside the squad almost immediately.
Ironically, Potter later complained publicly about a lack of leaders in the dressing room — something Antonio clearly found unbelievable.
“How can you say you’ve got no leaders in the changing room if you got rid of all the leaders?” he asked.
For many fans, that quote perfectly sums up the chaos that unfolded behind the scenes during West Ham’s collapse.
From European Glory To Relegation Disaster
What makes West Ham’s downfall even more painful is how quickly it happened.
Only a few years ago, the Hammers were celebrating UEFA Europa Conference League success and competing strongly in Europe under David Moyes.
Now, they are preparing for life in the Championship.
Potter lasted just 25 matches in charge before being dismissed after winning only six games. His replacement, Nuno Espirito Santo, could not stop the downward spiral as West Ham eventually dropped out of the Premier League.
Antonio admitted that at one stage he almost wanted relegation to happen so the ownership would finally feel the consequences of the club’s decisions.
“If they get relegated, it’s the only way the owner’s going to feel it,” he said.
Still, despite his anger, the former striker admitted he now feels sympathy for the current players and supporters.
Antonio Also Reveals Contract Frustrations
Antonio also opened up on the difficult circumstances surrounding his departure from West Ham following his serious car accident.
The forward described tensions with vice-chairman Karren Brady during contract discussions after the crash.
While he appreciated the personal support he initially received, Antonio claimed the business side became “ruthless” when he was offered a contract reportedly worth only £5,000 per week with no clear route back into the first team.
According to Antonio, Brady told him the club could not predict the outcome of his recovery after the injury.
The emotional interview paints a picture of a club struggling both on and off the pitch during one of the darkest chapters in its recent history.
Can West Ham Recover?
The biggest question now is whether West Ham can rebuild quickly enough to return to the Premier League.
Relegation often changes everything — finances, player morale, recruitment plans and even club identity.
For supporters, Antonio’s comments may confirm fears that poor leadership decisions behind the scenes contributed heavily to the collapse.
And for Graham Potter, the criticism from one of West Ham’s most important modern players is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
