Championship Play-Off Expansion: How The New Six-Team Format Could Change The Premier League Promotion Race
The race for promotion to the Premier League is about to become even more dramatic.
In a historic move, clubs in the English Football League have approved a major rule change that will expand the play-off system in the EFL Championship from four teams to six starting in the 2026-27 season.
The new format means that teams finishing as low as eighth place will now have a chance to fight for promotion, making the competition even more intense until the final day of the season.
For ambitious clubs like Wrexham A.F.C., the change could prove to be a significant opportunity.
What The New Championship Play-Off Format Means
For decades, the Championship play-offs have been known as one of the most exciting spectacles in football. Traditionally, only teams finishing between third and sixth place had a chance to compete in the play-offs.
Under the newly approved system, two additional teams will now join the race.
Here is how the new structure will work:
-
Teams finishing 7th and 8th will play eliminator matches against 5th and 6th.
-
Winners of those matches advance to the semi-finals.
-
They then face 3rd and 4th place teams in two-legged semi-finals.
-
The winners meet in the final at Wembley Stadium, where the ultimate prize—promotion to the Premier League—awaits.
In total, the expanded format will feature seven matches, adding even more drama to an already thrilling postseason.
A Big Opportunity For Wrexham
The change could particularly benefit clubs like Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham’s rapid rise through the English football pyramid has been one of the sport’s most compelling stories in recent years. With this new play-off system, even if the club narrowly misses out on a top-six finish in future campaigns, it could still remain in the hunt for promotion.
That means more opportunities for the Red Dragons to chase their ultimate dream: reaching the Premier League.
Why The EFL Approved The Change
According to EFL chief executive Trevor Birch, the decision aims to make the league even more competitive.
The Championship is already regarded as one of the most unpredictable football leagues in the world. By expanding the play-off spots, more clubs will remain in contention deeper into the season.
This eliminates what many fans call the “mid-table dead zone,” where teams with little chance of promotion or relegation lose motivation late in the campaign.
With eight clubs now having a realistic shot at the play-offs, every match could carry significant consequences.
More Drama For Football Fans
The Championship play-off final is often described as the most valuable match in world football, due to the massive financial rewards that come with promotion to the Premier League.
By expanding the play-off field, the EFL is effectively increasing the stakes, the drama, and the number of clubs dreaming of that life-changing moment.
And for fans, that means one thing: even more unforgettable football moments.
