Diego Simeone Praises ‘Different’ Ademola Lookman After Dream Atletico Madrid Debut
Diego Simeone has showered praise on Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, describing him as “different” after the Super Eagles star announced his arrival at Atletico Madrid in spectacular fashion.
Lookman made an instant impact for the Spanish giants, scoring a stunning goal on his debut as Atletico cruised to a dominant 5–0 victory over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
A Dream Start In Red And White
Having joined Atletico Madrid from Atalanta on deadline day, the 28-year-old wasted no time settling into life in LaLiga. Introduced during the game to a roaring Metropolitano crowd, Lookman brought pace, flair, and directness to Diego Simeone’s side.
His moment of magic came when he burst into the penalty area, skipped past two defenders with clever footwork, and calmly guided a bouncing finish beyond the helpless Betis goalkeeper to make it 3–0.
It was a goal that perfectly captured why Atletico pushed hard to secure his signature in January.
Simeone Explains Why Lookman Is “Different”
Speaking after the match, Simeone made it clear that Lookman offers qualities Atletico Madrid previously lacked.
“His characteristics speak for themselves; he’s different from the players we have,” Simeone said.
“He’s more of a one-on-one player than a team player, although he also has that aspect. He allows us to play in several positions. He had a great impact.”
The Argentine coach went further, highlighting Lookman’s maturity and physical profile.
“He’s a big guy, he’s 28 years old. He came to help us and hopefully we’ll help him continue to grow. He has different qualities than the players we have and that will make us better.”
For a manager known for discipline and structure, such early praise speaks volumes about Lookman’s fit within Simeone’s tactical setup.
Injury Concerns Temper Celebrations
Despite the emphatic win, Atletico Madrid were dealt a couple of fitness concerns on the night.
Julian Alvarez was a notable absentee from the starting XI and remained unused on the bench.
“Julian didn’t feel well last night,” Simeone explained. “This morning he tried to play, but he wasn’t strong enough. We agreed with the doctor that it wasn’t a good idea.”
Midfield lynchpin Pablo Barrios was less fortunate, forced off early in the second half with an injury.
“Barrios is our best midfielder,” Simeone admitted. “He has an injury that will surely keep him out for a couple of games. He’s very important to us.”
A Statement Signing
Lookman’s debut performance suggests Atletico Madrid may have secured one of the smartest signings of the winter window. With his ability to beat defenders, operate across the front line, and deliver in big moments, the Nigerian international adds a new dimension to Simeone’s attack.
If this debut is anything to go by, LaLiga defenders have been warned.
