Chelsea’s Carabao Cup Exit: Rosenior’s Tactics Blamed As Fofana Seen In Tears

Wesley Fofana upset after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal

Chelsea’s Carabao Cup campaign came to a disappointing end as they were narrowly defeated by Arsenal, losing 1-0 in the second leg of the semifinal (4-2 on aggregate). The Blues struggled to create meaningful chances, leaving fans frustrated and pundits questioning Liam Rosenior’s approach.

Passive Approach Costs Chelsea

Despite needing a goal to stay alive in the tie, Chelsea looked cautious and uninspired for much of the 90 minutes. Former Arsenal star Paul Merson suggested that the team’s tepid tactics left defender Wesley Fofana in tears at the final whistle.

“You see Fofana there. He played well, but he’s crying,” Merson said on Sky Sports.
“As a player, he’ll be in the dressing room and think, ‘We didn’t give it a go.’ We just got beaten and we didn’t give it a go.”

Chelsea initially lined up in a back-three formation, switching to a slightly more attacking setup in the second half. Unfortunately, the change did little to shift the momentum — the team recorded just one shot on target and an expected goals (xG) of 0.52.

Players Defend Rosenior

Despite criticism, Trevoh Chalobah defended Rosenior’s instructions, emphasizing that the team’s cautious approach was intentional.

“For us, we just go into the game knowing what the manager wanted. There’s no rush, we have a full 90 minutes to try and get into the game,” Chalobah explained.
“We came in no rush, no pressure. I thought the boys did well, stuck to the gameplan, were pushing towards the end but it didn’t work out.”

When pressed on whether the tactics were effective despite the loss, Chalobah insisted:

“I think most definitely.”

The Decisive Moment

The game was ultimately settled late, with former Chelsea player Kai Havertz scoring for Arsenal, sealing their place in the final and ending Chelsea’s five-match winning streak.

Chelsea will now have to regroup as they look to maintain form in the Premier League and future cup competitions, while Rosenior faces scrutiny over whether a more daring approach could have changed the outcome.
