Congo Coach Sébastien Desabre Reflects On Super Eagles Victory After 2026 WCQ Playoff Triumph
Desabre Hails DR Congo’s Performance Against Nigeria
DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has expressed pride in his team following their dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs. The tense final took place at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat on Sunday night.
Desabre, 49, stated that his side fully deserved the victory, highlighting the strong environment surrounding the team.
“We’re operating in a healthy environment that puts the players in the best possible position to perform. I’ve always been convinced that my team was capable of reaching this level,” he said.
Team Spirit and Resilience Key to Success
Despite conceding an early goal, Desabre praised the resilience of his players and their ability to stay composed under pressure.
“It’s difficult to start a match down 1-0. But the team spirit remained high, and we chose to try and control the game.”
The coach also acknowledged the collective effort behind the victory, extending thanks to both the team’s staff and government officials, including the President of the Republic and the Minister of Sports, for their unwavering support.
“We must congratulate the players, but also everyone who works around the team, as well as the government, His Excellency the President of the Republic and the Minister of Sports, who truly support their team.”
Respect for Nigeria and Moment to Celebrate
Desabre was quick to praise the Super Eagles for a strong performance.
“Nigeria also deserves to be congratulated. The match was very close. We could have not qualified, but overall, I think we deserved the victory.”
With the grueling 12-match campaign behind them, Desabre emphasized the joy and celebration that comes with achieving such a milestone.
“Now it’s time to celebrate. We’ve just played 12 matches under a lot of pressure, and I know these battles have been a long time coming. We play to bring joy.”
DR Congo now moves closer to securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental playoffs, leaving fans and players alike celebrating a historic night.
