Mikel Obi Warns Super Eagles: ‘Treat Gabon Like Your Last Game’
Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has sent a strong message to Nigeria’s national team ahead of their vital 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon, cautioning the players to stay disciplined and avoid complacency.
A win in the upcoming match would set up a decisive final showdown against either Cameroon or DR Congo, with the victor advancing to the Intercontinental Playoffs — the last hurdle before securing a place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
What Mikel Obi Said
Speaking on his official podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder urged the team to remain fully focused and approach the match with intensity and purpose.
“Go into that game and play like this is the last game you will ever play in your life,” Mikel said.
He added:
“Win that game, and then we can think about either Cameroon or someone else. The immediate challenge is the only one that matters.”
Mikel, who captained Nigeria to AFCON glory in 2013 and represented the country at two FIFA World Cups, stressed that overconfidence has often been the Super Eagles’ undoing in key fixtures.
As the team prepares for the high-stakes encounter, his words serve as both a rallying cry and a warning — a reminder that focus, humility, and hard work are essential if Nigeria is to reclaim its place on football’s biggest stage.
