Leighton Baines: From £6m Gamble To Everton Legend And Rising Coaching Star
David Moyes, famed for his eye in the transfer market during his time at Everton, owes one of his greatest-ever signings to a little push from his trusted assistant. While Moyes has reaped the benefits of talents like Charly Alcaraz and Jack Grealish in his second spell, one of his most impactful moves came years earlier – and it almost never happened.
Back in 2007, club legend Leighton Baines joined Everton from Wigan Athletic for just £6m. Initially, Moyes wasn’t convinced, but Alan Irvine, then his assistant, “banged the drum” for the young left-back. The result? Over 400 appearances, countless match-winning contributions, and a legacy as one of the finest defenders in Premier League history.
“David would tell you, I actually forced him to sign Leighton,” Irvine admitted. “He wasn’t sure, but I knew he would develop into something special.”
Baines’ Legacy At Everton
During more than a decade at Goodison Park, Baines became a cornerstone of Moyes’ side. Only Seamus Coleman, Tim Howard, and Leon Osman have made more Premier League appearances for the Toffees. Remarkably, Baines still holds the record for most assists by an Everton player in the competition – proof of his attacking influence from full-back.
Beyond statistics, he was a player who embodied consistency, professionalism, and quality delivery. His left foot was a weapon feared across the league.
From Pitch To Dugout
Now 40, Baines is carving out a second legacy – this time as a coach. Since hanging up his boots in 2020, he has quickly earned respect for his tactical ideas and meticulous attention to detail.
Alan Irvine sees big potential:
“He’s already a very good coach and could become a manager one day. His preparation, delivery, and personality make him special.”
Current Everton players echo the same. Defender Jake O’Brien praised Baines’ influence after netting against West Ham:
“Leighton has been a big part of our training – both attacking and defending. You can feel his touch in how we create chances.”
The Road Ahead
Moyes, Baines, and Everton have shown resilience this season, staying unbeaten in three matches after a rocky start. They’ve progressed in the Carabao Cup and are building momentum.
