Valverde’s Fitness Causes Worry For Real Madrid
Real Madrid are really worried about the fitness of their midfield star Federico Valverde after the Uruguayan missed the club’s pre-season trip to Austria due to muscle overload, according to SPORT.
It is said that manager Xabi Alonso is taking no chances with one of his most trusted players, especially given the demanding season ahead.
Valverde’s importance to Los Blancos cannot be overstated. Last season, he was the most-used player in the squad, featuring in all but two matches despite the club being hit hard by injuries.
Known for his tireless work rate and physical endurance, the 25-year-old managed to remain a consistent presence in midfield throughout a packed schedule.
However, with the midfielder having played 65 matches across all competitions in the previous campaign, Alonso is aware that fatigue and the short summer break could catch up with him.
To avoid any long-term setbacks, the coach intends to manage Valverde’s minutes carefully during the early stages of the season.
Set for central role, not right-back duty
One thing is already clear that Valverde will not be used as a right-back this season. With Trent Alexander-Arnold now in the squad, Alonso has no need to deploy him in that role for cover.
Instead, the Uruguayan will return to his natural midfield position, where he is expected to be a regular starter.
The question now is who will partner with him in the middle. The most likely option is pairing Valverde with Aurelien Tchouameni at the base, while Jude Bellingham operates further forward.
However, with Bellingham sidelined until November, Alonso will need to choose between Arda Guler, Brahim Diaz, or the new signing Franco Mastantuono to fill the gap.
For now, Madrid’s priority is to protect Valverde’s fitness, ensuring he remains at peak condition for the crucial months ahead.
