D’Tigress Rewarded With $100,000 Each and Housing After Historic AfroBasket Triumph
Nigeria Celebrates D’Tigress’ Record-Breaking AfroBasket Victory
Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has received a remarkable reward package following their triumphant win at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship over the weekend in Ivory Coast.
Each member of the victorious squad will receive a cash reward of $100,000 (£75,000) and a three-bedroom flat, as announced by Vice-President Kashim Shettima during a special reception held in their honour.
Seventh AfroBasket Title Secured
D’Tigress claimed their seventh AfroBasket title after defeating Mali 78-64 in an electrifying final on Sunday. The victory further solidifies Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball, making it their fourth consecutive AfroBasket championship win.
The win also guarantees Nigeria a spot at next year’s FIBA Women’s World Cup, where D’Tigress will look to build on their recent momentum and represent Africa on the global stage.
Government Recognition and Support
Vice-President Shettima praised the team for their determination and resilience, describing them as a source of national pride and inspiration.
“The country is proud of your achievement. This is a victory that goes beyond sport—it is a symbol of hope and excellence,” Shettima stated while announcing the reward.
This generous package mirrors the promise made to Nigeria’s women’s football team, the Super Falcons, who received similar recognition after their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph last month.
Looking Ahead to the FIBA Women’s World Cup
With qualification secured, attention now turns to preparation for the FIBA Women’s World Cup. D’Tigress will aim to make a strong impact on the world stage, combining their fast-paced style with championship experience.
For the players, the recognition and rewards are not only a celebration of success but also an important boost for women’s sports in Nigeria, highlighting the need for continued investment and support.
