Super Falcons Hold Portugal Goalless In Lisbon Friendly
Nigeria’s Super Falcons kicked off their preparation for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a composed performance in a goalless draw against Portugal at Lisbon’s Estádio José Gomes.
Remaining compact and disciplined throughout, the Falcons kept Portugal at bay with an impressive defensive showing, led by captain and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Despite some early pressure from the hosts, Nigeria held firm and stunned the home crowd.
In the second half, Nigeria grew in confidence. The team, though short of goals, showed glimpses of their attacking potential with slick movement and probing play. A notable moment came when Francisca Ordega forced a spectacular save, but Portugal’s crossbar denied what could have been the match-winner.
By full-time, the Falcons had tested Portugal’s defence repeatedly and delivered a resolute performance that left early observers impressed:
A solid first half from the Super Falcons’ Nnadozie and the backline stood firm as both teams looked for the breakthrough.
“We’re back out for the final 45. All to play for as the Super Falcons push for the breakthrough!” radioed one live update.
This friendly follows a 2–0 victory over Cameroon at home earlier this month and marks the team’s second international test as they gear up for WAFCON in Morocco.
The Falcons arrived in Lisbon on Sunday evening and trained diligently at Portugal’s Turf Arena ahead of the match.
They’ve assembled a strong 24-player squad under Coach Justine Madugu, including veterans Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Christy Ucheibe, and Michelle Alozie.
Despite not scoring, the Falcons will take confidence from their defensive discipline and tactical shape. With a crucial warm-up still ahead—against Ghana’s Black Queens in Morocco on June 29—the team is on track to fine-tune before WAFCON kicks off on July 5.
Coach Madugu and his squad return to Morocco with their heads high, ready to build on this foundation.
