‘Talk is cheap!’ – Dietmar Hamann tears into Julian Nagelsmann after Germany’s World Cup exit and questions commitment to national team role

Dietmar Hamann has launched a blistering attack on Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s shock exit from the 2026 World Cup, accusing the national team boss of failing to unite his squad and questioning his commitment to scouting players.

The former Germany midfielder believes the disappointing tournament campaign exposed long-standing issues under Nagelsmann, insisting the coach must shoulder responsibility for another major international failure.

Germany suffer another World Cup disappointment

Germany’s hopes of ending their recent World Cup struggles came to a heartbreaking end after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32.

Kai Havertz cancelled out Julio Enciso’s first-half opener before Jonathan Tah appeared to have won the match in extra time, only for his goal to be ruled out. Germany then missed three penalties through Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Tah, condemning them to the nation’s first-ever defeat in a World Cup penalty shootout.

The elimination follows Germany’s Euro 2024 quarter-final exit and consecutive group-stage eliminations at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Hamann questions team spirit under Nagelsmann

Speaking to RTE, Hamann argued that Germany have lacked unity throughout Nagelsmann’s tenure and believes the manager has failed to build the collective spirit required to compete for major honours.

“I think heart and bottle comes from team spirit, from being together, from knowing you can trust your teammates – they’re there for you when you need them,” Hamann said.

“I just feel, under this manager, that’s never been the case really.

“They had the odd decent performance, but on average the performance has been underwhelming. It’s been like this in the Euros, it’s been like this in the qualifying campaign, and it’s been like this in this World Cup.

“They always talked about the mood and the spirit in the camp. It’s all well saying it; you’ve got to show it. Talk is cheap, and I’ve never been convinced that this is a team as united… and honestly it’s the manager. It’s the manager’s job to get the lads united.”

Hamann criticises Nagelsmann’s scouting

The former Liverpool midfielder also questioned Nagelsmann’s preparation away from the pitch, claiming the Germany boss does not spend enough time watching potential squad members or scouting opponents in person.

Hamann alleged that Nagelsmann failed to watch several Germany internationals regularly at club level, including Inter defender Yann Bisseck and Brentford winger Kevin Schade.

“Now, this is a guy who rarely watches games,” Hamann continued. “He’s never been once in Milan to watch Bisseck play. He should’ve taken him to the World Cup. He’s never been in Brentford in two-and-a-half years to watch Schade, who scored 10 goals [eight] last season and 10 goals [11] the season before.

“In the Bundesliga, he might be watching one or two games a month. There were Champions League games where Real Madrid played. We had the Africa Cup of Nations in January, where he could have watched Ivory Coast and some of the potential opponents, but he didn’t go.

“The Club World Cup last season, where you play in these venues and experience the weather conditions and the heat… Roberto Martinez is here, Thomas Tuchel is here. Didier Deschamps, who’s won everything and is in his mid-60s, spent three weeks in America.

“Who’s not there? Our man.

“This is where I’ve got no sympathy for him. I think the team and he got everything they deserved, and they’re going home tomorrow.”

Pressure mounts on Germany boss

Nagelsmann now faces renewed scrutiny after another painful tournament exit, with Germany’s wait for a deep World Cup run stretching to more than a decade.

Having fallen short once again on the biggest stage, attention is likely to turn toward whether the German Football Association maintains its faith in the 39-year-old ahead of the next major international cycle.
