Raphinha’s cousin slams Brazil legend Vampeta over Saudi transfer claims as Barcelona star’s family denies ‘lies’

Raphinha’s family has publicly hit back at claims made by former Brazil international Vampeta, who alleged the Barcelona star is dealing with serious family and financial issues that could push him towards a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

The comments have sparked controversy in Brazil, with one of Raphinha’s relatives accusing the ex-midfielder of spreading false information.

Family rejects allegations

The controversy began after Vampeta suggested Raphinha was considering a move to Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal because of personal and financial difficulties.

Speaking on the Red Cast podcast, the former Brazil international claimed he had received information from sources close to Barcelona regarding the winger’s situation.

According to Vampeta, the 29-year-old was hoping a transfer to the Middle East could help resolve problems away from football.

Vampeta’s comments spark backlash

Discussing the situation, Vampeta said:

“Raphinha is going through a serious family problem, in addition to financial difficulties. He’s praying to see if he can go to Al-Hilal, he’s dealing with this situation.

“It’s a family matter. The information reached me through people close to the situation at Barcelona. He’s hoping that signing for Al-Hilal will allow him to turn things around.”

The comments quickly circulated across social media and Brazilian media outlets, prompting a response from the player’s family.

Cousin responds: ‘You’ll have to explain these lies’

Raphinha’s cousin, Igor Padilha, publicly challenged the allegations after seeing clips of the interview online.

Responding directly to Vampeta on social media, Padilha wrote:

“You’re going to have to explain these lies, my friend.”

The brief but pointed response immediately attracted attention and cast further doubt on the claims made by the former midfielder.

Saudi Arabia links continue

Raphinha has been repeatedly linked with clubs from the Saudi Pro League over the last two transfer windows, with Al-Hilal frequently mentioned among his potential admirers.

However, neither the player nor his representatives have publicly indicated any desire to leave Barcelona, where he remains one of the club’s most influential attacking players.

The winger has consistently spoken positively about life in Catalonia since arriving from Leeds United in 2022 and has become a key figure for both club and country.

What’s next?

For now, the only public response from Raphinha’s camp has been the strong denial issued by his cousin.

While speculation surrounding the Brazilian’s future is unlikely to disappear, the family has made its position clear regarding the claims of financial and personal problems.

Unless further evidence emerges, Vampeta’s comments appear to have been firmly rejected by those closest to the Barcelona star.
