Arsenal’s emotional Premier League title celebrations took an unexpected twist after two supporters were arrested for allegedly pretending to be matchday stewards during the club’s trophy-lifting clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The Gunners wrapped up their historic title-winning season with a dramatic 2-1 victory away to Palace, before lifting the Premier League trophy in front of jubilant travelling supporters. However, not every fan managed to secure a legitimate ticket for the massive occasion.
According to reports, two Arsenal supporters aged 35 and 37 attempted to gain access to the stadium by dressing as stewards in high-visibility jackets.
The pair were reportedly stopped by genuine security staff at the turnstiles before being detained by police officers stationed at the ground.
Authorities later confirmed that both men were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
The Metropolitan Police released an official statement following the incident:
“Two men, aged 35 and 37 were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation. This is after stewards at Selhurst Park stopped two men attempting to gain entry to the stadium on Sunday, 24 May. They were taken to custody by officers and have since been cautioned.”
The incident came after Crystal Palace and local authorities warned fans against trying to enter home sections illegally during Arsenal’s title celebrations.
Despite the isolated incident at Selhurst Park, the majority of Arsenal fans enjoyed a memorable day as the club finally celebrated its first Premier League title since 2004.
Back in north London, however, police were also forced to manage huge crowds gathering around the Emirates Stadium as supporters flooded the streets to celebrate the club’s triumph.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that several arrests were made throughout the evening.
A spokesperson stated:
“Officers were deployed around the Emirates Stadium and local area on Sunday, 24 May, as large crowds gathered to celebrate Arsenal winning the Premier League.”
“At around 6pm we put cordons in place to prevent further people entering the vicinity of the stadium. This was to prevent overcrowding and keep people in the area safe.”
Police also confirmed that 17 arrests were made for offences including affray, disorderly conduct, and assault on emergency workers.
While the celebrations were not without controversy, nothing could overshadow the significance of Arsenal’s achievement.
After years of heartbreak and near misses under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners finally climbed back to the top of English football, beating Manchester City to the Premier League crown after an intense title race.
For Arsenal supporters, it was a moment worth waiting more than two decades for — even if some fans tried a little too hard to witness it in person.
