Now, former Arsenal and Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos has lifted the lid on what it was really like to train and play alongside the legendary playmaker during AC Milan’s unforgettable “Galacticos” era.

And according to Senderos, Ronaldinho’s raw ability may have rivalled even Lionel Messi.

Ronaldinho: The Football “Artist”

Speaking exclusively to GOAL in association with Spreadex Sports, Senderos described Ronaldinho as one of the most naturally talented players he had ever seen.

“It’s difficult to compare with Messi or anyone,” Senderos admitted. “But definitely one of the most talented, if not the most talented, player I’ve ever seen with a football.”

That is an enormous statement considering the Swiss defender faced and trained with some of football’s greatest names throughout his career.

Senderos revealed that Ronaldinho’s brilliance was not just reserved for matchdays. According to him, the Brazilian produced moments of magic every single day in training.

“What he would do on a daily basis in training was absolutely unbelievable,” he explained. “It was a joy to watch.”

Then came perhaps the perfect description of Ronaldinho’s style.

“Ronaldinho was just an artist.”

And honestly, no word captures him better.

The AC Milan Superteam That Felt Like Football Royalty

Ronaldinho’s arrival at AC Milan in 2008 created one of the most star-studded squads football had ever seen.

The Rossoneri dressing room looked like something straight out of a video game.

Imagine walking into training and seeing Ronaldinho, David Beckham, Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Filippo Inzaghi and Andriy Shevchenko all preparing together.

That was normal life at Milanello.

Senderos admitted those sessions were simply incredible.

“It was unbelievable,” he said. “Pirlo could put the ball wherever he wanted. Ronaldinho was pure magic.”

At the heart of it all was legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti, who somehow managed to unite all those superstars into one functioning team.

Senderos praised Ancelotti’s ability to manage massive personalities while keeping the squad together like a family.

“He was able to get everyone pulling in the same direction,” Senderos explained. “That’s what made the team special.”

More Than Teammates — A Family

What surprised Senderos most was not just the talent, but the emotional bond within the squad.

He recalled arriving at Milan just as Cristian Brocchi and Massimo Oddo were leaving the club. Despite both players continuing their careers elsewhere, teammates were reportedly in tears during their departures.

That emotional reaction shocked the former Arsenal defender.

“These players were crying because they felt like they were losing family members,” Senderos said.

For a club filled with Ballon d’Or winners, Champions League heroes and global superstars, it was the human side of AC Milan that left the deepest impression.

“It really felt like a family,” he added.

Ronaldinho’s Legacy Still Lives On

Ronaldinho’s career is now being celebrated in a Netflix documentary series that explores both his football journey and his larger-than-life personality.

And honestly, few players deserve that spotlight more.

The Brazilian won almost everything football had to offer — the World Cup, Champions League, Copa Libertadores, La Liga, Serie A and the Ballon d’Or — but what truly made him special was the happiness he brought to the game.

Even today, players, coaches and fans still speak about Ronaldinho with a smile.

Because while statistics can measure goals and assists, they can never fully measure joy.

And Ronaldinho gave football plenty of it.
