Jamal Musiala reacting during Bayern Munich Champions League match
FC Bayern Munich may have secured a dominant victory in the UEFA Champions League against Atalanta B.C., but the win could come at a significant cost.
Injury concerns have emerged for key players including Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and goalkeeper Jonas Urbig following the emphatic 6-1 victory.
Musiala appeared to suffer an ankle problem late in the match.
The attacking midfielder grabbed his ankle after an attacking move in the 87th minute and was seen limping across the pitch. Bayern manager Vincent Kompany substituted him during stoppage time as a precaution.
Despite the scare, the 23-year-old had earlier contributed to the victory by scoring Bayern’s sixth goal of the match after coming on for Serge Gnabry in the second half.
Musiala only recently returned from injury after suffering a broken fibula at the Club World Cup last summer, making the latest concern particularly worrying for the German champions.
The situation appeared more serious for goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
The Bayern shot-stopper collided heavily with Nikola Krstović shortly before Mario Pašalić scored Atalanta’s consolation goal.
Urbig required assistance from coaches to leave the pitch and was later taken to hospital after experiencing visual disturbances, raising concerns about a possible concussion.
The young goalkeeper had been filling in for injured captain Manuel Neuer.
Earlier in the match, Canadian full-back Alphonso Davies was also forced off the field.
Davies left the pitch in tears, sparking immediate concerns about the severity of his injury.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl later suggested that the defender may have suffered a muscle injury, though the exact diagnosis is still pending.
Speaking after the match, Eberl offered an early update on the players’ conditions.
According to him:
Davies likely has a muscle injury
Urbig suffered a head impact and severe headache
Musiala’s ankle issue appears less serious and mostly precautionary
Team captain Joshua Kimmich also expressed hope that the injuries would not prove serious.
“We hope that Alphonso and Jamal’s injuries aren’t too serious,” Kimmich said.
The injury concerns come at a crucial moment in Bayern’s season.
If Urbig is ruled out, veteran goalkeeper Sven Ulreich may be forced to start the upcoming Bundesliga clash against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Meanwhile, Musiala’s potential absence could also affect his planned return to the Germany national football team training camp later this month.
With key fixtures approaching in both the Bundesliga and Champions League, Bayern will be hoping the injuries are not as serious as initially feared.
