The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Lagos State Chapter, joins the family, friends, and the entire Nigerian football community in mourning the passing of one of Nigeria’s most respected football icons, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde.
With great gratitude to God for a life well spent, we received the news of the passing of the revered Modakeke High Chief and the first indigenous Nigerian coach of the Super Eagles, who departed to the great beyond a few minutes ago.
High Chief Onigbinde was a towering figure in Nigerian football history, a distinguished coach, administrator, mentor, and patriot whose immense contributions to the growth and development of football in Nigeria and across the globe remain unparalleled.
His dedication, wisdom, and passion for the game helped shape generations of players and administrators, leaving an enduring legacy in Nigerian sports.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend whose life touched many with humility, integrity, and service to humanity.
The SWAN Lagos Chapter celebrates and honors the fulfilled life he lived and his remarkable contributions to the Nigerian nation and the global football community.
We pray that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ and gives his family, loved ones, and the entire Nigerian sports fraternity the strength to bear this great loss.
Final funeral arrangements will be communicated by the family in due course.
Good night, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, till we meet to part no more.
