Georgia Stanway Showing Why Arsenal Move Could Be a Masterstroke

Georgia Stanway celebrating after scoring for England in a match against Ukraine

Arsenal Women F.C. supporters watching England women’s national football team dismantle Ukraine women’s national football team 6-1 were treated to several standout performances.

Leah Williamson looked composed on the ball as she continues her return to peak fitness, Lotte Wubben-Moy impressed in defence, while Alessia Russo grabbed two goals.

However, it was Georgia Stanway—widely expected to join Arsenal this summer—who truly stole the spotlight.

Arsenal Transfer Appears Imminent

Stanway’s contract with FC Bayern Munich Women expires this summer, and after confirming she will not renew her deal, strong indications suggest she will move to Arsenal on a free transfer.

Speaking earlier about her future, Stanway admitted negotiations were nearly complete, hinting that an official announcement could arrive soon.

The move is widely considered one of the worst-kept secrets in women’s football, with Ona Batlle also expected to join from FC Barcelona Femení.

England Performance Shows Her Value

Stanway delivered an exceptional performance against Ukraine.

The midfielder constantly drifted into wide spaces, made dangerous runs behind the defence, and threatened goal throughout the match. Her influence paid off late in the game when she converted a penalty—maintaining her perfect record of 14 out of 14 for England.

She followed that with a stunning strike into the top corner before providing a sharp assist for Jess Park.

The performance pushed Stanway to 50 international goal contributions—31 goals and 20 assists—in just 88 caps, moving her ahead of former Lionesses star Marieanne Spacey in England’s all-time scoring rankings.

Something Arsenal Currently Lack

Arsenal already possess a talented midfield featuring players such as Frida Maanum, Mariona Caldentey, Kim Little, Victoria Pelova, and Kyra Cooney-Cross.

Yet none of them combine deep-lying midfield play with such consistent attacking output.

Stanway’s record this season—seven goals and eight assists—already surpasses the creative returns of most Arsenal midfielders and matches the goal tally of the more advanced Maanum.

Versatility Adds Even More Value

Another key strength is Stanway’s adaptability.

Throughout her career she has played multiple midfield roles—from attacking No.10 to holding midfielder—and this season at Bayern she has operated deeper than usual.

Despite the defensive responsibilities, she still leads Bayern players in duels won in the Frauen-Bundesliga and has completed more passes than any player in the league.

She also ranks among the team’s top creators for key passes.

A Perfect Fit for Arsenal

At 27, Stanway is entering her peak years and offers the rare combination of defensive work rate, creativity, and goal threat.

If Arsenal complete the expected move, they could be adding one of Europe’s most complete midfielders—someone capable of transforming their midfield balance and pushing them closer to major domestic and European success.
