Deco speaking about Barcelona transfer plans amid links to Julian Alvarez
Transfer speculation never sleeps — especially when it involves FC Barcelona.
But as rumours swirled about a blockbuster move for Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco delivered a message that was calm, firm, and slightly cryptic:
“It’s not the time.”
Amid growing chatter linking the Argentine World Cup winner with Camp Nou, Deco made it clear that Barcelona are not currently engaged in negotiations.
“We have not talked to any club or player. It’s not the time to do so, as much as we like them. We’ll talk when the time is right. It’s February. There are many players we like. We’ll see. We have two strikers. It’s not the time to make decisions.”
That statement does two things at once:
It cools speculation.
It keeps the door slightly open.
Barcelona may admire Alvarez — but admiration doesn’t equal action. Not yet.
While transfer headlines dominate social media, Barcelona are navigating a critical stretch of their season.
Balancing domestic pressure in LaLiga with European ambitions in the UEFA Champions League, the club’s priority is stability — not shopping.
And stability just took a hit.
Frenkie de Jong is set to spend around a month on the sidelines after suffering an injury in training — a significant setback at a crucial point in the campaign.
Deco admitted the timing couldn’t be worse:
“Today was a surprise… It’s not the time to have an injury, and he’s at a high level. We’ve overcome all kinds of injuries, and now we have to overcome one more.”
For manager Hansi Flick, squad depth will now be tested.
Barcelona are also staring at a steep 4-0 first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final.
It’s daunting — but Deco isn’t conceding.
“There are reasons to believe… This team has already shown that it can overcome tough moments. We’re only halfway through the game.”
Belief is part of Barcelona’s DNA. But belief alone won’t erase four goals.
Looking ahead, potential European battles against Paris Saint-Germain F.C. or Newcastle United F.C. loom large.
Deco acknowledged the contrasting styles:
“PSG is a great team, with very high-level players… But each team has its own challenges. We can’t choose. But we can fight to get through the tie.”
That’s the mindset in Catalonia right now: fight first, negotiate later.
Julian Alvarez remains admired. His profile fits Barcelona’s attacking philosophy — intelligent movement, technical quality, big-game experience.
But until the season reaches its decisive conclusion, the transfer drawer stays closed.
And in modern football, timing is everything.
At Sports Market International, we break down the strategy behind the speculation.
