FIFA Set To Rule On NFF Petition Against DR Congo Over Alleged Ineligible Players
Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup dream could receive an unexpected second chance as FIFA prepares to deliver a verdict on a formal complaint lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation against DR Congo national team.
The petition alleges that multiple Congolese players who featured in last November’s African play-off final were ineligible — a claim that, if upheld, could dramatically alter Nigeria’s qualification path.
Allegations Of Improper Nationality Switch
The NFF contends that at least six DR Congo players had recently changed international allegiance but failed to complete FIFA’s eligibility procedures before appearing in the decisive match.
Nigeria lost the play-off final 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time — a defeat that ended the Nigeria national team’s automatic qualification hopes.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi confirmed the federation’s confidence in the case:
“We believe we have a strong case, and we’re waiting for FIFA’s decision on our complaints.”
What Happens If Nigeria Wins The Case?
Should FIFA rule in Nigeria’s favour, the result of the play-off could be overturned — potentially allowing the Super Eagles to replace DR Congo in the Intercontinental Play-Off tournament in March.
Such a decision would effectively hand Nigeria a late route back into contention for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — a dramatic twist after their on-field elimination.
High-Stakes Decision For African Qualification
Eligibility disputes are treated seriously under FIFA regulations, particularly regarding nationality switches and player documentation.
If violations are confirmed, sanctions can include:
-
match forfeiture
-
player suspensions
-
replacement in qualification pathways
For Nigeria, the ruling represents more than a legal dispute — it is a potential revival of World Cup ambitions.
