Thomas Tuchel Set To Extend England Stay And Sign New Contract Until 2028
Thomas Tuchel is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract that will keep him in charge of England until Euro 2028, delivering a major statement of intent from the Football Association.
The German tactician, who took charge in January 2025, had initially signed a short-term deal covering the 2026 World Cup cycle. However, after impressive progress and renewed optimism around the national team, the FA are now ready to secure his services long-term.
The new agreement could reportedly be confirmed ahead of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League draw.
When Does Tuchel’s Current England Contract Expire?
Tuchel’s original contract was designed to conclude after the 2026 World Cup. His primary objective was clear: end England’s 60-year wait for a major men’s international trophy.
So far, qualification for the 2026 World Cup has been smooth, with England emerging as one of the favourites heading into the tournament in North America.
But with his current deal nearing its conclusion next summer, speculation had grown about a potential return to club football.
Interest From European Giants
Tuchel’s pedigree has ensured he remains in high demand.
He has been linked with:
-
Manchester United
-
Tottenham Hotspur
-
Real Madrid
With several major European clubs either searching for permanent managers or facing uncertainty, Tuchel’s availability had sparked widespread rumours.
However, the FA appear determined to fend off interest and secure continuity ahead of a home European Championship in 2028.
A Coach Re-Energised
Tuchel has previously hinted that he is enjoying life in international football.
“I feel re-energised and I love to work with the players,” he said recently. “I also know the level of support and trust I have.”
The FA reportedly view keeping one of the world’s elite coaches as a major strategic victory — particularly given the instability across Europe’s top clubs.
Senior England players including Harry Kane and Declan Rice are said to have spoken glowingly about Tuchel’s leadership and tactical clarity.
Building Towards Euro 2028
England have taken risks before by extending contracts before major tournaments — Fabio Capello’s 2010 renewal being a notable example.
But Tuchel is viewed differently.
He is seen not just as a short-term fix, but as a long-term architect capable of guiding England through a sustained era of competitiveness.
With Euro 2028 set to be hosted on home soil, securing Tuchel until that tournament could prove decisive.
If England are to finally end decades of near misses, stability may be the key.
