Endrick celebrating his goal for Lyon in Ligue 1 against Metz
Even those who do not follow French football closely will be aware of the precarious situation Lyon faced this summer. Spared administrative relegation to Ligue 2 just weeks before the season, the club’s survival in Ligue 1 depended on meeting strict financial requirements.
A firesale of top players followed, tempering expectations of another European campaign. Amid these constraints, sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean adopted an agile recruitment strategy, scouting talent from lesser-known European leagues.
Pavel Sulc and Ruben Kluivert arrived permanently from Viktoria Plzen and Casa Pia respectively, while Adam Karabec joined on loan from Sparta Prague. Yet the missing piece remained a central striker. Lyon left the position open, confident that the right opportunity would arise in the winter window.
That opportunity came in January when Brazil striker Endrick, who had played just 99 minutes for Real Madrid in the first half of the season, joined Lyon on loan. The 19-year-old immediately made his mark, scoring in his debut against Lille in the French Cup and following with four goals in five games.
A hat-trick against Metz made Endrick the youngest Lyon player to achieve the feat in Ligue 1, breaking a 54-year-old record held by Bernard Lacombe. In just a few matches, he leads Lyon in goals, shots on target, and dribbles completed, highlighting his instant impact.
Endrick continues Lyon’s proud tradition of Brazilian talent, following in the footsteps of Juninho Pernambucano, Cris, and Sonny Anderson. He also consulted national teammates Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimaraes before his move, ensuring he would thrive both personally and professionally.
“Obviously it’s a dream I have,” he said, noting his ambition to secure a place in Brazil’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca praised Endrick’s explosiveness and one-on-one ability, though the striker must adjust to his new role as the team’s focal point, highlighted by a recent two-yellow card sending-off against Nantes.
Off the pitch, Endrick’s arrival has been a commercial boon. His unveiling video is Lyon’s most-watched on Instagram, and clips featuring him dominate the club’s YouTube channel.
Endrick’s influence has been immediate, extending Lyon’s winning run and strengthening their European ambitions. With a Europa League final path laid out, a French Cup quarter-final secured, and Champions League qualification within reach, Lyon and Endrick are poised for a memorable second half of the season.
As the young Brazilian continues to make history, his arrival underscores the value of smart recruitment and Lyon’s ability to overcome financial adversity to compete at the highest level.
