Ike Shorunmu Backs Stanley Nwabali’s Exit From Chippa United As Goalkeeper Eyes Next Career Step
Former Nigeria international goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has openly backed Stanley Nwabali’s decision to leave South African side Chippa United, insisting the Super Eagles number one is ready for a bigger challenge in his career.
Nwabali has been one of Chippa United’s standout performers since arriving in 2022 from Nigeria Premier Football League outfit Katsina United. The 29-year-old has gone on to make around 70 appearances for the club across all competitions, cementing his status as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the South African top flight.
His consistency at club level has also translated to international recognition, with Nwabali emerging as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper for the Super Eagles.
Shorunmu Gives His Blessing
Speaking to Footy Africa, Shorunmu made it clear that he fully supports Nwabali’s desire to take the next step, as long as the move benefits his development.
“If he feels this is the right time for him to leave the club, then I will support him. The most important thing is that the move helps his career and makes him an even better goalkeeper,” Shorunmu said.
The former Africa Cup of Nations winner stressed that progression is crucial at this stage of Nwabali’s career, especially given his growing responsibilities at international level.
Advice On The Next Move
Shorunmu also urged Nwabali’s representatives to be deliberate and strategic when choosing his next destination, highlighting the need for stability, regular playing time, and long-term growth.
“I trust his agent will secure a good contract for him. He is an excellent goalkeeper and our number one. We’ve all seen his quality, and he still has room to improve,” he added.
Nwabali’s rise from the NPFL to becoming Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper has been widely praised, and many see a move away from Chippa United as a natural and timely progression in his career.
With his reputation growing both in Africa and beyond, the next transfer decision could prove pivotal in shaping the peak years of the Super Eagles star.
