Atletico Madrid Reignite Cristian Romero Interest After Tottenham Captain Slams Board

Atletico Madrid are preparing to reignite their pursuit of Cristian Romero after the Tottenham captain publicly turned on the club’s hierarchy, plunging his future in North London into serious doubt.

The Argentine World Cup winner shocked fans by branding Tottenham’s lack of January transfer activity as “disgraceful”, a furious outburst that has not gone unnoticed in Spain. With Diego Simeone still searching for a commanding defensive leader, Atletico are now closely monitoring a situation that has rapidly escalated.

Atletico Ready To Exploit Growing Spurs Unrest

Romero is once again firmly on Atletico Madrid’s radar following a turbulent spell at Tottenham that has strained his relationship with the club’s board. The La Liga giants attempted to sign the aggressive centre-back last summer but were unable to meet Spurs’ financial demands at the time.

Instead, Romero committed his future to Tottenham by signing a lucrative four-year contract in August, reportedly worth over £200,000 per week, and was later handed the captain’s armband by manager Thomas Frank.

However, the tone has shifted dramatically in recent weeks. Atletico have made the signing of a world-class centre-back a top priority ahead of the summer window, and reports suggest they are ready to test Tottenham’s resolve if tensions continue to rise. While Spurs may be reluctant to sell their captain so soon after extending his deal, Atletico believe the current unrest could open the door.

Romero Labels Deadline Day Inactivity ‘Disgraceful’

Speculation surrounding Romero’s future intensified after an explosive Instagram post just one hour after the January transfer window closed. In a message seen by thousands before being controlled by club officials, Romero criticised the lack of senior squad depth, calling the situation “disgraceful”.

The post was widely viewed as a direct attack on the Tottenham board, particularly amid an injury crisis that has left the squad stretched thin. The timing and tone of the message placed manager Thomas Frank in an awkward position, as he attempts to steady a faltering campaign while his captain publicly questions the club’s ambition.

Frank Issues Clear Warning To His Captain

This was not the first time Romero has aired his frustrations publicly. Earlier in January, following a chaotic defeat to Bournemouth, the defender posted another cryptic message accusing unnamed figures at the club of “telling a few lies” — a comment later edited but not forgotten.

Following that incident, Romero held talks with Frank and co-sporting director Johan Lange. While he avoided disciplinary action, the manager issued a pointed warning.

“You can make a mistake, but don’t make the same mistake twice,” Frank said at the time, hinting that patience was wearing thin.

With Romero now launching another public rant just weeks later, questions are growing over whether his relationship with Tottenham can be repaired — or whether Atletico Madrid will succeed in luring him away when the summer window opens.
