Michael Carrick Explains Mason Mount Absence In Manchester United Win Over Fulham

Manchester United’s thrilling 3–2 victory over Fulham delivered late drama and plenty of talking points — but one noticeable absence left fans puzzled.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick has now explained why Mason Mount was left out of the matchday squad, while also delivering more concerning injury news regarding defender Patrick Dorgu.

Why Mason Mount Missed The Fulham Clash

When the team sheet was released ahead of kick-off, Mount’s name was missing, sparking concern among supporters eager to see the midfielder gain momentum under Carrick.

Speaking after the match, Carrick quickly played down any fears, confirming that Mount’s absence was purely precautionary after a minor training ground issue.

“Just took a bit of a knock in training,” Carrick told Sky Sports.
“It is nothing serious, he will be back very, very soon.”

The update will come as a relief for United fans, especially with Carrick keen to keep continuity during his impressive start as interim boss. Mount is expected to return to contention for the next fixture.

Bad News For Patrick Dorgu

While Mount’s situation appears minor, the outlook is far less positive for Patrick Dorgu. The defender picked up an injury during United’s previous win over Arsenal, initially believed to be cramp.

Further assessment has since confirmed a more serious problem.

“Pat, unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a period of time,” Carrick explained.
“At the moment it looks a little bit more on the serious note.”

Carrick admitted the setback is particularly cruel given Dorgu’s recent form.

“He’s in such a good place right now, but unfortunately it is part of football,” he added.

The defender is expected to miss several weeks, though a precise timeline is still being evaluated.

Cunha Seizes His Opportunity

Dorgu’s absence opened the door for Matheus Cunha, and the Brazilian wasted no time making his mark. Cunha scored United’s second goal and provided the physical drive that helped tilt the game in the hosts’ favour.

Carrick described Cunha’s selection as an easy decision.

“It was a natural one,” he said.
“He’s got something a little bit different. He carries the ball, has a real presence, and he’s done unbelievably well.”

Carrick’s United Momentum Continues

With three Premier League wins from three games, Carrick’s interim spell continues to exceed expectations. Despite injuries disrupting his plans, United’s resilience and late heroics against Fulham reinforced a growing sense of belief around Old Trafford.

As Mount prepares to return and Cunha continues to impress, Carrick’s short-term reign is building serious momentum — and questions about the club’s future leadership are only getting louder.
