‘Sadio Mane Saved African Football!’ – Rio Ferdinand Praises Senegal Captain’s Leadership In Chaotic AFCON Final

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has praised Sadio Mane for his exemplary leadership during a chaotic AFCON 2025 final, stating that the Senegal captain “saved African football” by stopping his teammates from abandoning the match against Morocco.

Chaos at the AFCON Final

The final, held at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, was marred by controversy. A Senegalese goal was disallowed by referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo for a foul in the build-up, igniting tensions. The situation escalated in the 90th minute when Morocco was awarded a late penalty after a VAR review involving Brahim Diaz and Malick Diouf.

In protest, Senegal’s squad, under coach Pape Thiaw, initially walked off the pitch and headed toward the tunnel, threatening to abandon the game entirely.

Ferdinand Lauds Mane’s Intervention

Speaking on his “Rio Presents” podcast, Ferdinand condemned the walk-off but praised Mane for his decisive action:

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this in football, certainly not in a game of that magnitude… Everything was at risk; African football was at risk the moment the Senegal team went down that tunnel… Whether they were right or wrong in their belief… to walk off the pitch based on the decision that was made didn’t look right.

“Sadio Mane saved African Football, not just Senegalese football. He brought his team out of the tunnel and said, ‘Listen, guys, win or lose, you have to come out and play. The game, African football demands it.’ That was real leadership.”

Mane’s calm yet assertive leadership ensured the match continued, preserving the integrity of the tournament and avoiding further embarrassment for CAF and African football.

CAF Response

In response to the events, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) condemned the disruption and has launched an official investigation into the walk-off, highlighting the seriousness of the incident.

Sadio Mane’s actions have been widely praised as a defining moment of leadership, showing how one player can uphold professionalism, responsibility, and the spirit of the game, even in the most high-pressure situations.
