Achraf Hakimi Breaks Silence After Morocco’s Heartbreaking AFCON 2025 Final Defeat

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has finally spoken out following the Atlas Lions’ devastating 1–0 extra-time defeat to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final — a loss that crushed a nation’s dream of continental glory on home soil.

The Paris Saint-Germain star led Morocco throughout a historic tournament, but heartbreak struck in Rabat as Senegal snatched victory in dramatic and controversial circumstances.

A Final Filled With Drama And Controversy

The AFCON 2025 final, played at a rain-soaked Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, had everything: tension, controversy, and late drama. Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye proved the hero, scoring the decisive goal in extra time to silence the home crowd.

Morocco were handed a lifeline late on when a prolonged VAR review awarded them a penalty. However, Brahim Díaz’s audacious Panenka attempt was easily saved, a moment that will haunt Moroccan fans for years to come.

The defeat meant Morocco narrowly missed out on their first AFCON title since 1976, despite hosting what many have described as one of the most memorable editions of the tournament.

Hakimi’s Emotional Message

Two days after the final, Hakimi took to X (formerly Twitter) to pour out his emotions. Posting black-and-white images that captured the pain and disappointment of the moment, the right-back addressed fans directly.

“After very difficult days, trying to assimilate everything that happened, I needed to express myself from the heart,” Hakimi wrote.

The 26-year-old paid glowing tribute to King Mohammed VI, thanking him for his constant support and for helping Morocco deliver what he described as “undoubtedly the best AFCON in history.”

Hakimi also acknowledged Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, praising his unwavering belief in the team and long-term vision for Moroccan football.

“You Were Our Twelfth Man”

Turning his attention to the supporters, Hakimi highlighted the crucial role played by fans both at home and abroad.

“You were our twelfth man, our strength when our legs were heavy and our hearts hurt. We felt your support in Morocco and in every corner of the world,” he said.

The Moroccan captain also reserved special praise for head coach Walid Regragui, his technical staff, and the players, emphasising the 35 days of sacrifice, discipline, and unity that defined their AFCON journey.

“A group that showed the world that Morocco does not just compete, Morocco inspires,” Hakimi concluded.

Pain Today, Promise For Tomorrow

While the defeat will sting for a long time, Hakimi’s message reflects a squad that has earned global respect. Morocco’s AFCON 2025 run reinforced their status as a rising force in African football — not just competitive, but inspirational.

For the Atlas Lions, this may not be the end of the story, but rather the foundation for future continental success.
