Alex Iwobi Hails Eric Chelle For Uniting Super Eagles After AFCON 2025 Bronze

Alex Iwobi has showered praise on Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle for transforming Nigeria’s fortunes and uniting the squad during their impressive AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco.

Coming into the tournament, Nigeria were under intense pressure following their heartbreaking failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Expectations were low, and confidence around the team was fragile. However, Chelle quickly changed the narrative with a clear tactical identity and renewed belief.

The Super Eagles stormed through the group and knockout stages, recording five consecutive victories and displaying a balanced blend of attacking flair and defensive solidity. Chelle’s ability to integrate diaspora-based stars with homegrown talents stood out, creating a squad that played with purpose and cohesion.

A key tactical highlight of the tournament was Chelle’s decision to deploy a settled midfield diamond. This system unlocked the attacking trio of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams, while allowing Alex Iwobi to thrive in a clearly defined midfield role. Iwobi’s influence and composure were evident throughout the competition.

Although Nigeria’s title dream ended in a tense semi-final penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco, the team showed remarkable mental strength. They bounced back strongly to defeat Egypt on penalties in the third-place playoff, securing a well-earned bronze medal.

Reflecting on the campaign in his AFCON diaries, Iwobi was full of admiration for Chelle’s leadership and emotional investment in the team.

“The coach (Eric Chelle) has done a lot for us, everybody worked hard for him; when he gave his last speech, he got emotional,” Iwobi revealed.
“He deserves a lot of praise, he got the team together, big chemistry.”

While the Super Eagles will feel they had what it took to win the tournament, the progress made under Chelle offers real optimism. With improved chemistry, tactical clarity, and renewed confidence, Nigeria appear well-positioned for a more consistent and successful future on the international stage.
