Manchester City Prepare January Bid For Marc Guehi As Defensive Crisis Deepens
Manchester City Step Up Interest In Marc Guehi
Manchester City are reportedly gearing up for a decisive move in the January transfer window as they intensify efforts to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.
With his contract at Selhurst Park set to expire in the summer of 2026, City are keen to act now rather than risk missing out on one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre-backs. According to multiple reports, including Fabrizio Romano, the reigning champions have already made contact with Palace and are prepared to table a bid in the region of £35 million.
Why City Want The Deal Done Now
City’s urgency is largely driven by defensive setbacks. Injuries to Rúben Dias and Joško Gvardiol have significantly reduced Pep Guardiola’s options at the back, prompting sporting director Hugo Viana to fast-track plans for reinforcements.
Sources suggest City are confident an agreement can be reached quickly if Guehi gives the green light, with the belief that negotiations with Palace “would not be an issue” this month.
Crystal Palace Open To January Sale
Crystal Palace are understood to be pragmatic about the situation. With Guehi entering the final months of his deal, the Eagles are reportedly willing to cash in now rather than risk losing their captain for free at the end of the season.
Palace previously blocked a late move for the defender last summer after failing to secure a replacement, but January could present a different scenario as clubs circle and time runs out.
Competition From Premier League Rivals
Manchester City are not alone in the race. Arsenal and Liverpool are also monitoring Guehi’s situation closely, while European giants such as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona have been linked with a potential free transfer in summer 2026.
Liverpool, in particular, came close to landing the England international last August before the deal collapsed on deadline day.
A Defender In High Demand
At 25, Guehi is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s standout defenders, combining composure, leadership and consistency. His performances for both club and country have elevated him into elite-company conversations, making City’s move as much about future-proofing as solving immediate problems.
For Manchester City, securing Guehi now would not only ease their current injury concerns but also prevent a fierce bidding war later in the year.
