Man Utd To Win Title By 2028?! Michael Owen Gives Verdict On Red Devils’ Premier League Trophy Target & Reveals What They Need To Do To Achieve Ambitious Goal
Manchester United may have had a turbulent few months, but the Red Devils are already setting sights on a bold target: winning the Premier League by 2028. Former United striker Michael Owen has shared his thoughts on whether this ambitious plan is realistic and what it would take for the club to capture its first domestic crown since 2013.
Interim Leadership And Project 150
Following the sacking of Ruben Amorim after a 14-month spell at Old Trafford, Darren Fletcher—current U18 coach and club legend—has been placed in temporary charge. United are considering interim options for the remainder of the season, with names like Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being linked to caretaker roles.
Owen told GOAL,
“It’s always the case, changing halfway through the season, a lot of the main candidates are in work and are hard to prise away. If Fletch does well… it might be that he gets the role until the end of the season. I wouldn’t rule that out.”
The club’s management is following Project 150, which lays out a clear timeline and a series of objectives, including domestic silverware by 2028. As Chief Executive Omar Berrada said,
“Can the team win the Premier League title by 2028? Of course. We’ve just finished 15th and it seems an impossible task. But why not aim for it? Why not do everything in our power?”
What Owen Thinks United Need
Owen believes the foundation is there but acknowledges that much work is required.
“They have got some very good players. Obviously they need a very good manager and another three or four very good players. Things change quite quickly in football… Once the juggernaut turns, I would say it will start picking up at a fair pace. However, it’s been the turning that has been the hard thing for the last decade!”
He points out that while Old Trafford may be aging, United’s investments in training facilities, staff, and the squad itself create a solid base for success. With the right leadership and a few key additions, Owen believes that United could realistically be back in contention for the Premier League in the coming years.
The Road Ahead
Whoever takes over permanently—Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is reportedly a top target—will have the responsibility of making United competitive both domestically and in Europe. It won’t be an easy path, but with a mix of strategic signings, strong management, and consistent performances, the Red Devils could finally see their ambitions of lifting the Premier League crown realized by 2028.
