Anthony Joshua looking somber during public appearance following team tragedy
Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly contemplating retirement from boxing following a heartbreaking car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his closest associates.
The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and has left the 36-year-old boxer emotionally devastated, according to family sources.
The tragedy claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, both long-time members of Joshua’s team, who were integral to his career both in and out of the ring.
Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, revealed that the boxer has privately discussed the possibility of retiring in the aftermath of the accident.
“The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing,” Adedamola told Punch during a visit to the family home in Sagamu, Ogun State. “That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally.”
On Sunday, Joshua attended an emotional Janaza (Islamic funeral prayer) for both men at the London Central Mosque. The coffins were placed side by side as prayers were offered, and hundreds of mourners gathered outside the mosque.
Following the prayer, the coffins were transported to a nearby crematorium, with a wake held later in the day.
The boxing world has expressed condolences, with fans and fellow athletes mourning the loss of two members of Joshua’s inner circle and offering support to the champion during this difficult time.
