Wayne Rooney Delivers Brutal Verdict On Ruben Amorim After Manchester United Sack

Wayne Rooney has never been one to sugarcoat his opinions — and Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United reign has not escaped the club legend’s blunt judgement.

Following United’s decision to sack the Portuguese coach after a disappointing run of results, Rooney delivered a damning verdict that summed up the growing frustration surrounding Amorim’s time at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s United Tenure Ends Abruptly

Manchester United confirmed Amorim’s dismissal on Monday, just 14 months after his appointment. The final straw came after a flat 1-1 draw against Leeds United, a result that left the Red Devils marooned in mid-table and fans increasingly restless.

Hired in November 2024 after impressive work at Sporting CP, Amorim arrived with a reputation for authority and tactical conviction. However, that promise failed to translate in England, with inconsistent performances, internal tensions, and public disagreements with the club’s hierarchy defining his spell.

Rooney’s No-Nonsense Verdict

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast just hours before the sacking was made official, Rooney made it clear he was unconvinced by Amorim’s leadership style — particularly his recent public outbursts.

“He is not Pep Guardiola. He’s not Jürgen Klopp,” Rooney said.

“He hasn’t got that history or background, so I don’t think he should be speaking with all authority.”

The former United captain stressed that commanding full control at a club like Manchester United is something that must be earned through elite-level success.

“You need to earn the right to dictate exactly what happens in a football club, especially at Man United,” Rooney added. “If Guardiola comes in, nobody questions what players he wants or the system he uses.”

Contract Comments Raised Eyebrows

Rooney also took aim at Amorim’s controversial post-match remarks about having 18 months left on his contract — comments that reportedly infuriated United’s board.

“Well, I don’t think he’ll have 18 more months if it carries on,” Rooney said bluntly.

That prediction proved accurate within hours.

Rooney admitted he was left confused by Amorim’s messaging and public stance, questioning whether the former Sporting boss truly understood the demands of managing one of football’s biggest institutions.

“The words he is saying are very confusing to me. He hasn’t got that background or history,” Rooney concluded.

A Familiar Story At Old Trafford

Amorim’s exit adds another name to the growing list of managers unable to steady the ship at Manchester United in the post-Ferguson era. Talent, ideas, and ambition have repeatedly collided with pressure, politics, and expectations at Old Trafford.

For Rooney, the message was simple: authority at Manchester United is not claimed — it is earned.
