Paul Onuachu Rates Performance Highly Despite Super Eagles’ Friendly Defeat To Egypt
Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has expressed satisfaction with his individual display and the team’s overall performance despite Nigeria’s 2–1 defeat to Egypt in a preparatory friendly ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria suffer narrow loss to Egypt
As earlier reported by Pulse Sports, the Super Eagles were edged out by the Pharaohs in their AFCON warm-up encounter, marking Eric Chelle’s side’s second consecutive defeat in friendly matches.
Egypt took the lead through Mahmoud Saber before Chidozie Awaziem equalised for Nigeria just before half-time. However, a second-half strike from Mostafa Mohamed proved decisive, sealing victory for the North African side.
Onuachu reflects on his performance
Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu was handed a starting role in the absence of Victor Osimhen and completed the full 90 minutes. Although he failed to find the back of the net and was booked during the encounter, the towering forward believes he delivered a strong performance.
“I felt good playing against them, especially knowing that I had scored against Egypt in the past,” Onuachu said, according to NaijaNews.
“I had a good feeling during the game, and you could see that in my performance.
“I played with a lot of confidence and focused on playing my game. Unfortunately, we lost and the goal didn’t come this time, but I still felt good on the pitch.”
Team performance earns praise
Beyond his individual display, Onuachu also commended the collective effort of the Super Eagles, insisting the result did not reflect their overall showing.
“I think both the team and I had a good game,” he added.
Focus shifts to AFCON opener
Nigeria will kick off their AFCON 2025 campaign on December 23, with a rematch against Egypt scheduled as their group-stage opener. Victor Osimhen is expected to return to the starting line-up for that encounter, while Onuachu is likely to resume his role as deputy striker.
As the tournament draws closer, the Super Eagles will be hoping to fine-tune their performances and convert promising displays into positive results when it matters most.
