Denzel Dumfries Injured During Serie A Match For Inter Milan
Inter Milan’s title defence has taken a hit with the news that Denzel Dumfries will be sidelined for several months following ankle surgery. The Dutch international underwent the procedure after a persistent injury failed to improve with rest, forcing head coach Cristian Chivu to rethink his winter strategy and prompting the club to explore the January transfer market for reinforcements on the right flank.
Dumfries had been managing discomfort in his left ankle since sustaining a knock against Lazio in November. Despite conservative management, the pain persisted, limiting his mobility and prompting both player and club to opt for surgery. The procedure, performed at London’s Fortius Clinic, was successful, but the recovery timeline rules him out of the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana and a significant portion of the Serie A season.
Reports from Italy indicate that the 29-year-old faces at least two to three months on the sidelines, with a hopeful return around mid-March. For Chivu, losing Dumfries is a substantial setback; the Dutchman’s blend of physicality, pace, and attacking output on the right wing is central to the coach’s 3-5-2 system.
Dumfries’ absence has forced a complete rethink in Inter’s January plans. Prior to the injury, the club’s focus was reportedly on trimming the squad and offloading fringe players. Now, sporting director Piero Ausilio and CEO Beppe Marotta must identify a capable deputy who can provide immediate impact.
Italian press reports suggest a few potential targets:
Marco Palestra – The 20-year-old Atalanta loanee currently impressing at Cagliari is known for his energy and crossing ability. Securing him midway through a loan spell could be challenging.
Brooke Norton-Cuffy – Genoa’s wing-back has adapted well to Serie A and fits Chivu’s physical profile. However, Genoa may resist selling a key starter in January, potentially driving up costs.
Inter are reportedly exploring loan deals with an option to buy, a formula that has worked for them in previous windows. Still, Dumfries’ injury may force them to open their chequebook to ensure the squad remains competitive.
With the Scudetto race intensifying and Champions League commitments looming, Inter now face a crucial few weeks to secure cover and maintain momentum without their marauding right wing-back.
