Newcastle’s Dan Burn Rushed To Hospital After Rib Injury In Derby Defeat To Sunderland

Newcastle United’s defensive woes deepened during their 1-0 derby defeat to Sunderland as towering centre-back Dan Burn was rushed to hospital after sustaining a rib injury that left him struggling to breathe. The England international, who collided with Sunderland star Nordi Mukiele, was forced off the pitch just before half-time for emergency medical assessment.

Burn’s Injury Details

Burn, 6ft 7in, initially attempted to continue after receiving treatment following the challenge, but the pain worsened, and Newcastle promptly sent him to hospital. Boss Eddie Howe revealed after the match:

“He was struggling to breathe at half-time. It was a big problem. Dan Burn has gone to the hospital for a check of his ribs, so hopefully he will be OK.”

Reports now confirm that Burn has suffered a fractured rib, meaning he will miss the upcoming festive run of Premier League fixtures. Howe added that the injury was a major blow for Newcastle, who are already dealing with several absences in defence.

“We’re losing players in one area of the pitch and our back line is stretched. To lose another one in the colossal presence that Dan is, was a big one today.”

Newcastle’s Defensive Injury Crisis

Burn’s absence adds to a growing list of defensive concerns for the Magpies. Key injuries and suspensions include:

  • Sven Botman: Out since November 9 with a back complaint, could return against Chelsea.

  • William Osula & Emil Krafth: Ruled out indefinitely with ankle and knee injuries.

  • Kieran Trippier: Expected back in January.

  • Nick Pope: Missed five matches with a groin problem.

Burn has been a near-ever-present this season, starting 15 of Newcastle’s 16 Premier League fixtures and all six Champions League games in 2025-26. His injury leaves the Magpies thin at the back as they prepare for a challenging December schedule.
