Claude Le Roy predicting Senegal’s chances at AFCON 2025
When Claude Le Roy speaks about African football, the continent listens. And this time, the legendary coach has stirred excitement by tipping Senegal as one of the top contenders for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations—even ahead of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
According to Le Roy, Senegal sits just below Morocco on his personal power ranking, thanks to what he describes as a perfect blend of experience, discipline, and youthful energy. Coming from a man who led Cameroon to defeat Nigeria in the 1988 AFCON final, his opinion carries serious weight.
Le Roy believes Senegal has evolved into one of the most complete teams on the continent. Their roster balances battle-tested veterans with fresh talent ready to explode on the big stage.
Picture this:
Sadio Mané still pulling strings in attack
Kalidou Koulibaly anchoring the defense
Édouard Mendy bringing calm between the sticks
Rising stars like Pape Matar Sarr, Ibrahim Mbaye, and Mamadou Sarr adding fire and flair
That combination is why Le Roy said confidently on Canal+:
“Senegal play well. You only have to look at the stats and before Nigeria, they are the second big favourite behind Morocco for me in this Africa Cup of Nations.”
Senegal’s AFCON journey begins in Tangier, where they will play all their group matches. The Lions of Teranga will face:
Botswana – a tricky opener
DR Congo – a tactical chess battle
Benin – coached by former Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr
With such matchups, their campaign could gain momentum quickly—or set the tone for a dramatic tournament run.
Nigeria remains a giant with a rich AFCON history—three titles and generations of football icons. But with internal inconsistencies, coaching debates, and squad imbalance, Le Roy believes Senegal simply looks more ready at this moment.
Whether you agree or not, one thing’s certain: AFCON 2025 is shaping up to be a showdown of giants.
